DES MOINES, Iowa - Dreaming of biting into a garden-fresh cucumber sandwich this summer? Better order your seeds now.

A poor growing season last year and increased orders from Europe could make it difficult for home gardeners to get seeds for the most popular cucumber variety and some vegetables this spring. Farmers, who usually grow different varieties than home gardeners, aren't likely to be affected.

Sheesh, I just read my post and saw all they typos. Battery on remote keyboard was going dead. Please feel free to “edit” before the grammar police jump on me. Then again, some gardeners might look at my typos and say “Bless his heart” and really got out of their way to help ;-)

“Buy heirloom, and save your own seed.”

Agree with that. Heirlooms are excellent, and some of the heirloom tomatoes are really excellent. We saved some seeds from last year, and will do so again. True of other veggie plants too.

It’s when the ‘collect ‘em all’ bug hits you that you realize you’re in trouble...my ‘kryptonite’ is hot peppers...should have seen my wife roll her eyes when I found out there were over 3700 varieties of hot peppers in existence. Really? Cool.

We had several varieties of hot peppers too. We are still enjoying some of the peppers - pickled, frozen. Our garden was small, but prolific. The bed was mostly aged horse manure (from our own horses). We planted stuff so close that the weeds never had a chance. Green beans too. And beets, potatoes. Next year we will be able to harvest some of our asparagus. And yes, did I mention peppers...Mmmmmmm :)

On Feb. 3 I ordered some seeds from Baker Creek Seeds. They came in the mail today. 4 days to order, process, ship, and deliver.

Me impressed. [grin]

When mine came in the mail; I noticed that the order had been processed AND mailed the SAME day I called it in, and my order wasn’t that small. Fast, indeed.
