DALLASAn obscure candidate with backing from the "tea party" movement threatens to deny a decisive victory to either Texas Gov. Rick Perry or Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in the battle for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Texas.
Little-known Debra Medina made a splash two weeks ago in a televised debate. She criticized the governor for "painting a rosy picture that doesn't exist" about the Texas economy and said her rivals' "squabbling isn't getting us anywhere."
Mrs. Medina "stole the show," said Harvey Kronberg, longtime editor of the Quorum Report newsletter in Austin.
On Friday night, Mrs. Medina will try to prove that her debate showing was no fluke.
A nurse and former Republican Party leader in Wharton County, in south Texas, Mrs. Medina is running on a platform of small government, states' rights, and the elimination of property taxes and gun-registration laws.

Medina may be a nice person. I will tell you what I don’t like about her. She comes out of the blue. No one has ever heard of her. She has no record to prove who she is or what she is capable of doing. She can talk a pretty game; but the biggest cons with their baby blues can do that.
Yes, I am cautious; but going for a top spot like Governor with no experience is a bit too ambitious to me.
Why should I vote for a person with no known qualifications just because they say they can do this or that? It just doesn’t compute.
However, if people like her go ahead and vote for her; but I am not.
It could be as disasterous as Arnold in CA. CA had a golden opportunity to put things right when they got rid of Davis. Did they do it? No, they voted in Arnold which was a big, big mistake as we all know. Didn’t anyone read he was married to a Kennedy and they stick together and they have name recognition?
p.s. to all: I’m mainly kidding around, I don’t know any more about Medina than what’s on this thread......
Medina has no track record..I WILL NOT vote for her even though she talks a good game.
I don’t know who is worse, KBH or Perry....
I will vote GOP, but it will be as bad as voting for McCain was....just the lesser of two evils...
I hope she looses...she is unimpressive and knows nothing of politics to qualify for the office... a nursing background and four year degree is not enough. If the teaparty movement is supporting her, and just gets behind the wannabees down the road here, then I will be stepping back from my envolvement with the teaparties.
The candidates need to be at least in some degree qualified or we’ll have more like Bo who have no clue what they are doing in the office they are in or how to function effectively.
Debra Medina comes across pretty well on radio interviews, as she spews her talking points. Contrary to the liberals who have written news articles and blogs about this Libertarian candidate, ala Ron Paul, who runs on the GOP ticket... she will do nothing but split the GOP votes further and is not a qualified person.
Professional Nurses are respected by all, but that education and background does not qualify one to be a Governor of the second largest state in the USA with an economy and business growth that is besting all other states.
Medina showed nothing but amateurism in the PBS broadcast of the debate a while back, as she acted like someone from the Obama administration and just kept repeating her talking points instead of answering questions directly. She’s expressed some decent ideas, but she’s a loser that would not be able to deliver; just like Obama.
Perry and Hutchison were pretty bad in that debate, as well, as KBH immediately began personally attacking Perry and calling him a liar. She’s a POS who has had too many years in D.C. and learned that throwing crap at an opponent is sometimes better than having a viable plan.
governor
Under this reasoning, you would vote for Obama over Mark Steyn or Rush Limbaugh.
Oops, I misread your comment. My apologies.
Medina was a field manager for Ron Paul and ran for the Vice Chair of the Republican Party. While running for the office she was suing the party over their rules.
IIRc, she wants to legalese drugs and she takes no position on abortion.
Speculation is that she is running in the Governor’s race in preparation for a run for Kay Bailey Hutchison’s Senate seat.
She has very little support in the state and will lose at the primary level.
She has stated that if she loses the primary she may not support the Republican that the voters choose. Which leads one to question her participation in the republican debates and primary. She should run as an independant as that is what she appears to be.
There are some supporters who have been calling conservative talk radio shows claiming that she is the Tea Party candidate, but that is far from the truth. I’m a Tea Partier and I don’t have the slightest intention of voting for her.
I’m voting Medina in the primaries. Screw Gov. GoodHair and KBH.
uh oh....
She quoted “Clinton” favorably on one of her videos...she’s going to pull votes and she knows it...said she is the peoples candidate and opposes the republican party.Claims to be the tea party candidate but they are saying she’s not.
On her tweet she reminds me of Bo..all about her. “They’re talking about me”...
“She has stated that if she loses the primary she may not support the Republican that the voters choose. Which leads one to question her participation in the republican debates and primary. She should run as an independant as that is what she appears to be.”
Yea..heard her speeches, she definately is opposing the republicians...and stated so. Therefore why is she running with them?????
She’s a wannabe candidate who tells us she had no ambition to run until three people asked her to last Nov...and that the tea party didn’t have anything to do with her running...then turns around and claims she’s the teaparty candidate.
Watching the debate right now, Medina is doing nicely!
BELO folks are trying to play “GotYa” with mainly Medina and Perry, KBH seems to be getting a bit of a ride. MSM wants KBH to win the Primary.
You think she is a ringer? She did come out of nowhere and who is really backing her?
I think she is trouble...this election for her is about her..A chance to be a star in her own eyes. She is not a politician at all..I am sooooo opposed to what she is doing because I’m afraid others will step up like her and ..
well I stated before we simply cannot afford dipwad candidates who don’t know how politics work ..or dont work..our nation is in trouble and they better know something going in..she does not.
She’s learning how to “talk the talk” ..taking baby steps...not walking the walk... that is not someone ready to take on State issues. She’s a baby in the arena.
I agree. If she wants to run for office; she needs to do local first.
I hope we don’t end of up with Bill White because of her and if we do; we deserve it because this is one of the Lefties oldest tricks that always seem to work. Split the vote so their guy can win.
What choice do we have?
Medina ad:
Who is going to think more about Latino families? Rick Perry, Kay Bailey Hutchison or me, who has a Latino family? (Medinas cultural heritage is German and Bohemian.)
She told a colleague last month in an e-mail. Being married, however, to someone with a Mexican American heritage, I certainly embrace the culture. But before she explained that, she told my colleage, who had asked her whether she considers herself Latina: Id not consider myself anything other than a wife and mother, a nurse and a patriot. I believe we too often get into race when its immaterial.
No, Thanks, Mrs Medina.
She is also running Spanish ads. Hello Mrs.Medina! If they cannot speak English then they have no business voting IMO. When they learn English then let them vote. Assimilate. Learn English. Appreciate all America gives you.
So Im sure she is blowing a lot of hot air just like Obama did just to get elected. Running those ads and saying what she has, tells me the border issue is just a try to get votes for herself.
No, thanks, Ill stick with ol RINO Perry. Texas has remained in better shape than almost any if not all of the states in the union under Perry's watch. As someone said, 'he's the devil we know'.
The motly crew running for governor is laughable; a MUSLIM, a trecherous RINO woman* (Hutchison) and a woman with questionable loyalties
*Feds Have Built Only 32 Miles of 700 Mile Double-Border Fence Originally Mandated by Congress One reason DHS has been able to do this is an amendment that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R.-Texas) slipped into an omnibus appropriations bill that Congress passed on December 18, 2007. Hutchisons amendment put a loophole in the fence law that allowed the secretary of Homeland Security not to build the fence Congress had mandated the year before.
