Endorsement of McCain alienates Palin supporters
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 2010-01-26 | Jay Bookman

Posted on 01/26/2010 2:17:50 PM PST by rabscuttle385

Sen. John McCain, the man who brought Sarah Palin to national prominence, is being challenged for re-election in the GOP primary by former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth. Palin recently announced that she plans to travel to Arizona to campaign on McCain’s behalf, but posters on her Facebook page are not at all happy with their Sarah:

“Sarah, it was fun, but now you are done.”

“Sarah, your support of McCain shows bad judgment and brings into question the validity of your words. You can forget any political ambition if you support Amnesty – which John McCain does. Conservatives don’t forget.”

“You do know Senator McCain is a PROGRESSIVE? It is very disappointing that you are campaigning for him instead of J.D. Hayworth. McCain needs to go!”

“Sorry to hear that you are supporting McCain. Up to now, I thought you were part of the solution, but you’ve shown yourself to be part of the problem.”

“McCain!? Are you kidding me? Time to pick a side, Sarah– Are you with the people, or against them?”

“I agree with those who advise you not to campaign for Senator McCain. He really doesn’t represent the views of grassroot conservatives. He represents those in the GOP who have too often been willing to compromise on principle, or even worse, have failed to really understand basic conservative principles.”

“McCain used Palin like a cheap tool to keep from getting beat worse than Reagan did to Mondale. His staff mocked her and showed no respect. Now McCain is using her again like a cheap tool and this time she is willingly doing it under the guise of loyalty. As long as McCain is the face of the GOP, conservatives are irrelevant. Palin is playing politics and this goes against what she “supposedly” represents. She helps elect McCain, she’s done.”

“I respect your loyalty to McCain, Sarah, but he really is using you. You need to do what you are obligated to do for him, and then run as far away from him as possible. He’s widely despised in the Conservative movement, and you’ll be hurting yourself badly with your support base if you do more than offer your token support or speak on his behalf.”

“McCain is not a commonsense candidate. If you support him your future as a conservative candidate is over.”

“Another day ~ another appeal to our girl from Wasilla: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not follow through with your plan to campaign for John McCain. In the insightful words of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman: “Big mistake. Big. Huge.” To do so will destroy your credibility, have your enemies carping: “I told you so,” and leave your fans devastated.”

That’s just a small sampling of some 2,500 comments, and I have to admit to being surprised by the vehemence and near-unanimity of that sentiment. It makes me think that McCain might eventually have real trouble in the Arizona primary.

I am amazed that so many on this board seem willing to throw anyone and everyone overboard for any or no reason at all. We have gone a long way (and the wrong way) if the search for “conservative values” in a candidate has morphed into a requirements for absolute ideological purity in one’s associations - despite having personal ties to the individual.

I have been accused of being a “purist” or “hundred percenter” for stating that there is a minimum level of conservatism for a candidate to garner my support. It appears that my seventy percent requirement is at least twenty-five percent lower than many people on this forum.

Conservatives are in no mood for compromise on principle. If the governor is indeed a conservative, iis it too much to ask that she behave as one?

Sarah is not an elected official right now though. She's a private citizen.

This isn't the same as Bush campaigning for Specter.

Is this an example of Dims “divide and conquer” strategy?

Methinks DeMint is gearing up for a run.

Right now, the two other Conservative options, Hayworth and Shaddig have not officially even filed.

That’s correct. I think the last day for filing is May 26 with the primary Aug. 24, so why the rush to endorse so early on? My opinion, it is/was an attempt to shut out the filing by other candidates. If so that is a very poor reason.

Just a nutty conspiracy theory, but she actually hasn’t made any campaign appearances yet.

What would happen if she campaigns for McCain in the same manner as he campaigned for president.

Think about it...

What a disheartening situation. It’s almost impossible to convey how much respect I lost for her when she endorsed that bastard.

McCain and Hayworth played in sh** and managed to not get any on them

The fact is, they were cleared.
If you want to take the liberal tactic of portraying them as "tainted", that's your decision but the bottom line matters.

18,432 people like this.
2556 people expressed their views of dislike....I’ve been watching this thread of hers since it was posted. People also get on her new threads with anti-McCain rhetoric. They are not trolls

I agree. I just don't understand these posters hypocrisy on the issue. Did they vote for Obama? Probably not. They voted for McCain. So they are hypocrites.

Do I like that she supports McCain? No. There may very well be a reason that she is and we don't know it.

Instead of complaining about Palin, they need to support McCains opposition.

Kind of like saying ditto.

A lot of other forums have ways of voting up comments, that is what it is from.

You seem to be accomplishing what the democrats desperately wanted to do but couldn’t.

Like I said, the Dems just issued a memo on how to split the GOP. Watch what happens during the AZ primary. You're going to see flattering puff pieces written on how Sarah has "moderated" and "moved to the middle" by supporting McCain. All of it is designed to tick conservatives off and alienate her from the base. American Thinker and other blogs are already running with it.

Doing in our best hope for conservative leadership.

Conservatism is in big trouble if Palin's endorsement for someone who supports amnesty for illegals, the socialist bail out, abortion and opposes drilling in ANWR is our best hope.

I swear, if Jesus Christ Himself were running some people would be damning him for having a tax collector on staff.

Yep exactly.

Yes and it's a lemming stampede. Palin scares the left. They need to stop her NOW.

When the story comes from the Atlanta Constipation, you can be sure she didn’t fall on her sword. She honored an earlier promise. This is what we can expect to be the drum beat of left for the next year. Good Luck with that.
