If you want to do something about corruption in politics and get a handle on campaign contributions, do these two steps:

(1) Every candidate and party must publicly post donor names, city, state and amount. Failure to do so disqualifies the candidate from holding office.

(2) Pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting the federal government from allocating any money to the states or localities. If Congress cannot bring home the pork, contributions will dry up.

Also, the bigger the contribution, the more extensive the disclosure. A million dollars is legal, but you have to also state your employer, any corporations in which you own more than 5% equity or debt, or sit on the board of directors or are an officer, and any ties to foreign governments or non-profit organizations. A billion dollars is legal, but you have to make your tax returns public as well. A trillion dollars is legal, but...
