PHILADELPHIA -- A misunderstanding about an Orthodox Jewish prayer ritual led a US Airways Express captain to divert his Kentucky-bound plane to Philadelphia on Thursday, authorities said.

A 17-year-old boy on Flight 3079 traveling from New York to Louisville was using tefillin, a set of small black boxes attached to leather straps and containing biblical passages, said Philadelphia police Lt. Frank Vanore.

It is a Jewish ritualistic object of prayer.

“How about a rule requiring air crews to exercise judgment?”

Nah! Never happen.

However, it is understandable why they would be a little goosey these days. They know they cannot depend on the TSA to keep terrorists off the plane.

I assume you are saying that his religion required this action. Fair enough. If we allow all kinds of exceptions for religious practices, then how can we also object to Muslim women keeping their faces covered in driver’s license pictures?

Firstly, he was obviously scanned and wanded in the airport where he was wearing these things openly.

Secondly, this country was founded on freedom of religion and should be protected from hysterical ignorance (not on your part but the pilot/crew).

I’m just very surprised a (supposedly well-traveled) stewardess would not know what he was doing.

Piranha, how many times a day to you pray? Does it have to be at a specific time? I’m familiar with Jewish tradition.....but not the ‘specifics’.

Stupidity and hysteria does not protect airplanes.

Well, we've had no successful terrorist incidents on US air carriers since 9/11.

We've also had eight and a half straight years of stupidity and hysteria courtesy of the TSA, under both GOP and Rat administrations.

Now you and I know that correlation < > causation, but the sheeple don't, so I expect more and more stupidity and hysteria in future.

Wait until the Snakehandlers start busting out their props.

When it comes to prayer, I’ll take Jesus’ direction from the Sermon on the Mount....

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

I wonder if our new Haitian friends coming to FL will do any voodoo rituals involving chickens on the way here.

That would be a diverse and exciting flight.

Well, the TSA does not exactly have a sterling reputation for screening out potential terrorists and their carry on equipment.

It is understandable how flight crews would be nervous these days, given the events of the recent past.

I have never heard of them either. What makes you think that everyone knows all about Jewish practices?

I didn't say "everyone," I mentioned the nexus to La Guardia, near New York City, which is home to one of the largest concentrations of Orthodox Jews outside of Israel.

I thought flight crews weren’t supposed to freak out?

I thought flight crews were supposed to have judgment?

How about the most BASIC knowledge of the religion that flies planes into buildings and blows up aircraft?

You can’t tell a jihadi from a Jew?

Three times a day. Only the morning prayers involve the “accoutrements” of a talis and tefillin, although on a public fast day there is a torah reading (reading from the scroll) as well.

The morning prayer is done from slightly before sunrise to a few hours later; the afternoon prayer is done from midday until just after sunset; and the evening prayer is done any time after that. The afternoon and evening prayers take 10 minutes or less, and the morning prayer can take about 40 minutes. They all are best done in a minyan (a group of at least 10 men) but can be prayed alone as well.

If you want to learn more, you may want to check with Chabad (www.chabad.org) for a traditional Orthodox minyan led by people who are eager to bring in absolute beginners. There are thousands of Chabad synagogues throughout the US and worldwide.

Why not compare rosary beads to animal sacrifice while you're at it?

The practice of laying tefellin is a strict observance of Deuteronomy 6:8 - "Bind [these words] as a sign on your hand, and let them be an emblem in the center of your head."

Thanks for that! My 10-yr-old is home sick, today, and I’m passing on your lesson to him (he’s over my shoulder, hehe). He was asking me about the history because he saw the news story, earlier. We’ll check out the link! Cheers!

Dear US Airways pilots:

Please note the difference between Muslim passengers

This is bad

And Jewish passengers

This is good

There's a quiz tomorrow, so please study hard.

In Haiti, they actually do mix Catholicism and voodoo and call it Santeria .

And I wasn’t equating the voodoo and Judaisim. I just wish people would pray without putting on a pre-flight show.

How about you grow a thicker skin and letting people exercise their religious beliefs as long as they do not involve murdering other people?!!

Anyone who has never seen the phylacteries might justifiable be concerned.

It’s really a rare sight as these prayers are to be said upon rising first thing in the morning.

Ok, I am from Iowa. My church very much honors the Jewish roots of our Christianity. We sell mezuzah’s in our book store (among other similar items), and I even had a class of kids make their own one year. Don’t be dissing Iowa...(But before attending my current church, I didn’t have a clue about much of this stuff.)
