Henry Cabot Lodge held it until the early 1950s. Massachusetts elected GOP Senators until then and they had a GOP Senator in the seat now held by Kerry until 1979.

But 1979 was more than 30 years ago. The last time they elected a Republican to the Senate was 1972 which is almost 40 years ago. Massachusetts is a pretty blue state. This is going to be a real shocker for Massachusetts to elect a Republican.
