Governor Deval Patrick continued today to press for a change to state law to allow him to appoint an interim replacement for Senator Edward M. Kennedy as he announced that a special election for the seat will be held on Jan. 19. "
To clarify, the 2004 law was not unequivocally repealed, however the State legislature did act to allow the Governor (in this instance) to employ his exectiuve powers to appoint an interim replacement (predetermined not to run in the special election) until such time as a special election could be held (there was a Repub court challenge to this but it was dismissed by a liberal judge). I guarantee you that if the situation is one day soon reversed, the Repub Gov will not be granted the same priviledge.
