Actually Haiti in the 70’s was perfectly safe, very affordable, temperate, good food, not a bad place to visit.

In 1971 I went to Haiti for a long weekend to get away from Jamaica! Disregarding the people living on canebrake refuse in the harbor area, Port-au-Prince was very pleasant.

Poverty has been a way of life for these people forever.

Getting off the plane at Port au Prince and heading up the mountain to Petionville the first thing you normally saw were people who propped up large sections of cardboard over a chain link fence. This was their home. We can only imagine life there.
