All passengers went through a ‘puffer/sniffer’ the last time I flew out of Denver 2 yrs. ago.

We first saw the "puffers" in Tampa about 2 years ago. They were there for maybe three months, then they were gone. I have always wondered what happened to them, why, and how much we paid for each of those now-unused machines. We have flown out of Denver several times in the last three years and I don't remember ever seeing them.

What I want to know is "WHAT'S WRONG WITH USING DOGS?" Good Grief! That should be a no brainer!

They are - in ISRAEL!

Here in the U.S. the elderly, anyone wearing a leg brace, using crutches, all over 40 5'1," blond, grandmothers (me) and middle-aged men wearing running shoes are treated with suspicion.

I'm tired of hearing, "Whatever it takes to make us safe while flying," crap. They aren't doing "whatever it takes to make us safe," they KNOW the exact type to scrutinize, refuse flying privileges to - it's Islamist men or women NOT the rest of us.

I'm sorry for all Muslims who are not terrorists but if it were radicalized Amish, men wearing beards, long black coats and hats, you'd better believe, they would not even be allowed on public transportation!

We have known for some time exactly who desires to harm us -- they tell us. It is only our PC government who pretend NOT to know - including and especially Bush, now it's Obama.

What do we know about the backgrounds of TSA employees; baggage-handlers; crews that clean and service aircraft; and workers at all airports -- NOTHING!

Who are treated as terrorists, innocent travelers and business people, no one with the slightest intention to kill, maim and destroy flyers and aircraft but we are treated as potential threats when everyone in government, law enforcement and the American public know exactly who to profile. Israel does it and you don't hear anything about Muslims attempting to blow up their aircraft.

Even the liberals in Israel, and believe me, there are plenty, but they aren't screaming about the "poor Palestinians" being subjected to searches at airports. Palestinians aren't suing the Israeli government for infringements on their "privacy."

When we have Muslims gathering making suspicious statements and acts and are removed from flights, some ACLU lawyers jump to their defense.

"'Puffer' machines, full-body imaging scanners, a simple frisk or bomb-sniffing dogs all would likely have detected the chemical explosive PETN, experts say."

The guy hid the explosives in his crotch, and maybe even fully inside his rectum. If the TSA is going to start performing the kind of "simple frisking" that could detect that, I'll drive, thanks.

It was not equipment failure, it was human error

Two equipment failures were involved:

(1) The metal detectors failed to detect what they were never designed to detect.

(2)The bomb failed to detonate.

The terrorist should have never got beyond the ticket counter and probably not withing 50 miles of the airport.

I don’t know it for a fact but there have been reports that he didn’t have a passport. Which would really piss me off - making Americans have to do all sorts of things because THEY didn’t check his passport would be really aggravating.

I agree with every bit of your post except for one thing.

I do not care at all about muslims who are not terrorists. Not one bit. I am not going to risk my life or anyone else’s in an attempt to distinguish non-violent muslims from violent muslims.

To quote a Freeper from another post on a different subject:

“All guns are loaded.”

IIRC because they were as effective as hope for, and required lots of maintenance.

I think I broke one of them.
What can I say, I like refried beans. :)

Brilliant.

Metal detectors don’t respond to hamsters, rabid raccoons, and elephants packed with TNT, either.

I also "don't care about muslims...."

What I do care about is that no one, not one person who has committed or attempted to commit a terrorist act, threat, or other violent act against Americans was NOT a Muslim.

If someone was in a small college shooting people and that person happened to be 6' with red hair, would not everyone 6' with red hair be checked.

It's ridiculous to ignore an actuality - only Muslim males between late teens to early 40s are committing these acts. Yes, not all or even most but terrorists are NOT Amish, why pretend that they could be "anyone" when we know what "types" to look for.

It's sad when even conservatives have become so PC that reality no longer is reality, it's "too mean."

We would have never won WWII with that kind of attitude.

Sorry Toby, but I was hearing that over and over thru the weekend. I see your point though, it does need to be part and parcel to each report about the attempt.

I think that your concerns about invasion of privacy are unfounded, but I can’t speak to the health hazard issue. I did the operational testing for L3Com’s millimeter wave radar system. The system met the DoD standards for RF emissions, coming in far lower than many fielded RF emitters. I’ve been around that stuff so long, that my chromosones are probably fried anyway. I’ve been scanned by one of these things and would do it again if given the option.

As for the privacy issue, if you want a little sexual thrill, then a trip to the beach or the local supermarket are in order, the display on this thing is not that revealing. It will, however clearly show when someone is trying to conceal an object, it would have certainly detected this device provided the operator was paying attention.

“The system met the DoD standards for RF emissions”

How much do we know about 94 GHz radiation? That’s the same freq as the long-range “people cooker” pain ray that’s also supposed to be safe, as long as you run when you are hit with it.

They say the back scatter xray is safe, given that you get more radiation at altitude. The safety then is given as a relative hazard, not an absolute.

Here’s why the Islamo’s PETN did not go high order. He tried to burn it. The stuff will just burn because PETN is a stable high explosive as with all general military high explosives. What he needed was more shock, friction, and/or compression. He could have tried to step on the PETN...which could have set it off while it burned.

And for the news people out there. The common vernacular for P.E.T.N. is pronounced “PET’n” like in your pet dog or cat.
