There have been some reports that the syringe had water in it to mix with the powder. There are many incendiary items which will react with water and cause explosions. Water does not always stop chemical reactions. Sample: putting water on top of skin that is reacting to DMSO will intensify the problem- not diminish it.

Perhaps the trips to the bathroom is the key to getting the water they need to accomplish the chemical reaction.

what do you mean about skin reacting to DMSO? I use it and it only smells, but doesn’t burn, etc.,,,
