commends and honors Native Peoples for the thousands of years that they have stewarded and protected this land

Driving hundreds of buffalo over a cliff so they could take a few is "stewardship"?

The reason they “stewarded” the land (this was written by an illiterate), is that they did not have a material culture or the tools to do anything else. They simply did not have, nor were they in the process of developing, the ability to manipulate their surroundings to any significant extent. The natives, especially in North America, were living their short and brutish lives in a late Stone Age culture, using their women as pack animals and fighting and killing off each other on every occasion. They hunted numerous species to extinction long before Europeans arrived. The language in that bill is a joke, and it sounds like it was written by a committee of 8th graders.

Correct.

Is there anybody who sees any value whatsoever in paying a native people not to assimilate?

I am part “Indian” myself, probably most Americans are.

Keepers of the land?! Have any of you been to SE Alaska and seen the huge clearcuts up here? A large portion of these logged areas are “Native” lands, and you know what? more power to them, then can log it or conserve it whatever they want to do. The point is, they don’t really give a d@amn about the land.

Europeans were a stronger race of people, with more advanced weaponry, and superior numbers. It was a war for dominance, what don’t people understand about that?

I am tired of the Federal Government continuing to help “Natives” feel sorry for themselves. Get a life!
