-snip- For the first time in two years, a measure billed as "comprehensive immigration reform" has been introduced in Congress.
The bill — HR 4321 — filed Tuesday by Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., incorporates most of the provisions of a measure introduced in June by Rep. Mike Honda, D-Campbell.
At last count Tuesday night, it had 89 co-sponsors.
Honda's bill focused on legal immigration issues such as eliminating visa backlogs and giving green-card holders the same rights as citizens to bring their spouses and children to the U.S. But Gutierrez's bill is much more sweeping. It includes a provision that would allow the country's 12 million illegal immigrants to legalize by paying a $500 fine, learning English and passing a criminal-background check.
It would also require employers to check a federal database to verify the immigration status of job applicants.
In 2007, the last time Congress grappled with the issue, a bipartisan Senate bill sponsored by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., failed when Republicans blocked votes over the amnesty issue.
But Democrats think immigration reform has a better shot this time around.
"Now, we have the White House," Honda said Tuesday. "And now we have leadership in both houses that want to see it happen."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, says she will let the Senate take up the issue first after Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., files his version of the immigration reform bill after the holiday break.
Groups that favor decreased immigration were quick to pounce on the legislation.
"It certainly has everything in there for every special-interest group — from amnesty for illegal aliens at the bargain-basement price of 500 bucks, to increased family-based immigration, to increased employment-based immigration," said Ira Mehlman

I am so sick of these people, I just hope the Republicans have the backbone to fight all these future bills until the elections.
So now we use this in conjunction with the healthcare bill. Let the American people now that if millions of illegals are granted amnesty they will qualify for healthcare which the American taxpayer will be paying for. They will be taking more jobs that Americans are now taking to feed their families. Obama and the rats are going to have one hell of a fight on their hands. We need to go after this administration with everything we’ve got. Drive his numbers into the ground.
Thank goodness the “clauses that prevent future Congresses from changing them” aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. Future Congresses will have the same authority to change them as the current Congress has to enact them.
When enough american citizens have nothing left to lose then there will be a diiferent kind of “change” than the sort the great zero forsaw.

Absolutely, we need to mount a huge offense NOW! Get those Republicans on-board before it’s too late.
And we need to get the word out re: their real motives. They don’t care about these people (illegals) they’re trying to ensure their re-election after they turned against the American people with their healthcare.

I wish I was as optimistic as you. If that was the case (”not worth the paper they are printed on”), then that section would be illegal. Until someone challenges it in court and a ruling is made, be very aware of what they are capable of - future congresses will not be able to change the law until it is challenged.
Think about it. Let’s imagine that, next year, the Republicans take over both houses of Congress. (I’m not saying that will happen, I’m just saying, suppose they do.) They pass legislation containing language that reverses the provisions that were “permanent.” Who or what is going to do anything about that? Congress can change any law it wants, and doesn’t have wait for a court challenge to do so. Separation of powers, remember? A current Congress cannot tie the hands of a future Congress.
Unlawful and unconstitutional. Unless we get one more Sotomayor on SCOTUS. Then we go to Hitlerville.
In a sad, perverse way, it doesn’t really matter how many illegals are added to the “free” health care bandwagon.
The so called health bill will be the nail in coffin of the teetering economy. If we crash as hard as it is beginning to look like we will, no one is getting squat.
However, these 12 million (more lie 15-18 million) illegals are going to be a lot less constrained by civil niceties when it comes to getting what they need in a collapse than most Americans. Libs without weapons are going to be the first victims.
Yeah, more like 36 million.
“Now we have the White House,” as congress critter Honda said. Hell, two years ago, George W. Bush was president and he was 100% on board with amnesty. Anyone remember his “See you at the signing” comment?
Healthcare takeover, cap ‘n tax, amnesty....looks like the democrats WANT a revolution!
We can retake the House which will give us some leverage.
And add some Senators, so we can filibuster.
