The Democrats passed a highly unpopular bill with two votes to spare in the House and none to spare in the Senate. Now they have to blend the bills (mostly reflecting the Senate one) and get them back through both chambers after hearing from their constituents over the holidays.
Furthermore, the House bill passed only because of relatively strong anti-abortion language demanded by pro-life Democrats in particularly precarious seats. The Senate bill doesn't contain that language. So either the anti-abortion Democrats in the House or the pro-abortion Democrats in the Senate are going to have to cave. Combine this with other issues, and the Democrats' almost-nonexistent margin for error, and final passage is anything but certain.

“So when, exactly, did you start caring about socialism?”
When it was no longer a choice but mandated by nothing more than government fiat.
I agree with most of your post.
But stop faulting those who have been fighting communism/socialism for all of their adult lives with not having won in that fight.
We’re still trying. We’ll do what we have to when the time comes.
“But stop faulting those who have been fighting communism/socialism for all of their adult lives with not having won in that fight.”
Merry Christmas.
Lest you think I am wagging a finger at you, I am one of those people that is at fault. It does not good to “play a good game” and lose. We’ve lost thus far because we have not educated the public as to the benefits that will accrue to them by supporting the conservative cause. Granted, we have a tougher challenge on our side - because the abstraction of delayed gratification, or individual freedom is no longer a near universal part of our culture.
We have let this happen.
The first step is to elect leaders that will “do no harm”. GWB failed that test. We can not afford to ever repeat that mistake again - ever. We got Obama as a result.
At this moment, we, at best, have nearly a full stable of Republicans in Congress that “do nothing”. If we only “do nothing” we’ll never change things for the better.
“Were still trying. Well do what we have to when the time comes.”
No, we aren’t really trying on this issue. On healthcare the GOP opted for “do nothing” and were not creative enough to see what was plainly before their faces - that our medical insurance and delivery system scares the hell out of people - especially at the lower middle class level. They fought this only by scaring seniors that “someone was going to cut Medicare” - a Democrat party tactic.
We’re pathetic at educating the people that we want to vote for us on our political aims. We lack political leadership, and we have no vision on this healthcare issue.
Those that advocate some unspecified “We’ll do what we have to do” that may or may not involve our 2nd amendment rights better decide what it is they want before embarking down that path. Right now there is nobody leading the political opposition to Obama and the Democrats. How did we end up electing such a stable of “do nothing” cowards?

I obtained a list of so-called “moderate” senators from the Tea Party. All numbers apply to Washington, DC. It is:
