Mum 'forgot' toddler left in car
The Daily Telegraph ^ | December 23, 2009 | staff writer

A WOMAN has been charged with leaving her toddler locked inside a car in scorching temperatures while she went shopping, forcing passers by to rescue him.

Shopkeepers used a hammer to smash their way into a four-wheel drive and rescue the screaming youngster in the car park of a shopping centre at McGraths Hill in northwest Sydney on Tuesday.

The temperature inside the car was estimated to be more than 60 degrees Celsius.

The boy's 34-year-old mother was interviewed at Windsor Police Station this afternoon and charged with leaving a child unsupervised in a motor vehicle.

On local talk radio this comes up at least once every summer as it seems in Milwaukee someone leaves a kid in a car for hours on end. It amazes me how many people are willing to defend the parents or caretakers actions. Some people think leaving a kid in the car is like leaving a bag of groceries in the trunk.

Milwaukee? That's up near Canada isn't it?

Sydney is on the counter latitude to San Diego or Atlanta.

This time the airbag was prevented from killing the kid. Very lucky.

Back in the good old days (i.e., before air bags), my kids ALWAYS rode in the front seat, and therefore didn’t have to worry about being fried. But today it’s a different story and airbags have the proven capability to kill kids in a non-moving vehicle, even when they don’t deploy, and there is no accident.

Once again, thank you Jimmy Carter and Joan Claybrook.

So, if someone stayed in the 140 degree car to supervise the kid, that would be OK?

I have to say I agree with you.

When the kid falls asleep in the back seat, and Mom is busy with a million things, she can easily forget the kid is there. It’s almost Christmas; she needs to get to the stores before they close; the store selling Auntie Sue’s favorite bubble bath is on the opposite end of the mall from the store selling a new power drill for Dad; all these people are getting on her nerves... and the quiet baby in the back seat doesn’t even enter her thoughts.

My son always rode in the front seat.

I seem to recall that some cars are starting to have alarm systems put in place to warn of objects (like children) left in the back seat. That might help.

I have heard repeatedly that one foolproof way to prevent leaving your child in the back seat is to put your purse or briefcase (something that you will need) in the backseat. That way, even if you do forget it, you will hopefully quickly realize you left something even more important in the car.
