Virginia Republicans aim to take 4 Democrats' congressional seats
The Washington Post ^ | 12/22/2009 | Amy Gardner

Newly energized by last month's landslide victories in state elections, Virginia Republicans are laying the groundwork to mount aggressive challenges against four Democratic congressmen next year.

Republican leaders think that they can reclaim at least two of the three seats they lost last year, when President Obama became the first Democrat in 44 years to win Virginia. They also think that the political climate has changed so decisively that they can unseat U.S. Rep. Rick C. Boucher, a 28-year incumbent from the far southwestern part of the state, where antipathy toward Obama and national Democratic policies run strong. And they are planning a well-financed challenge to Gerald E. Connolly of the Washington suburbs, where victory is possible although more difficult, they say.

Nationwide they need to aim for about 60.

Let me guess. Given the concentration of military facilities and retirees in Virginia, the GOP will manage 4 of 4 with either no military experience OR experience in the JAG. This seems to be the pattern nationwide.

I was thinking of starting a PAC for doctors. We need to get all the docs to donate $30 a month to vote all this crap out that voted for ObamaCare. Docs could raise $100 million by 2010.

I suspect that this trend has a lot to do with the decision of the Alabama Democrat to join the GOP this morning.

Aw c'mon now. We've only got 11 seats to work with. And we already have five of them.

Don't make Virginia do all the work. :-)

Good for them to be bold. Target any district where there is even a remote chance of winning. At this point in 2005 few expected the Dems to win so many seats where Repubs were entrenched but it happened. So they should make every effort.

Encouraging news from the Virginia.

I still don't think a Senate takeover is realistic this cycle, but the House is possible.

In fact, if the election were held today, I am confident we would do so.

Two of the dems are in horrible shape- Nye and Boucher. Odds are they won’t be back. Boucher may even retire. The fifth district should be an easy GOP pick up but the “establishment” is trying to ram a pro tax RINO down the base’s throat. It will be a bloodbath in a district that is as right wing as you can get. In the 11th in Northern Virginia the democrat is scared out of his mind and has a lot of enemies within his own party. It will be a close fight there. A GOP pick up of 2-3 seats in Virginia is very, very doable. Four is not at all out of the question.

I wish someone could unseat Bobby Scott, but his district has been so gerrymandered along racial lines it’s almost impossible to get a Republican or Conservative majority.

If true throughout the country, the GOP stands an excellent chance of taking the House.

Sounds like my district (MD-7). Currently “represented” by Elijah Cummings, who succeeded Kweisi Mfume.

I live in Howard County, but our district contains much of Baltimore...so the demographics are as follows:

34.9% White, 59.1% Black, 3.6% Asian, 1.7% Hispanic, 0.2% Native American, 0.6% other

Not sure what you mean but Ben Loyola, opposing Nye, is a Naval Reserve Capt, past active duty, and Academy graduate, now engineer/businessman. The genuine thing.

Not sure about Nye's military, but he was a gov't State Dept wonk. Like Webb (Sen) passes himself off as conservative to win the constituency.

Nye beat Thelma Drake last election. Personally I could hardly bring myself to vote for her, not that she didn't vote as a conservative congressman, but as seems endemic to all Republican politicians, all the literature kept blabbing about seniors, children, families, education, blah blah. If one believed gov't dependence of children, seniors, families, education, blah, blah, was the role of federal government one would vote Democrat; at least they're up front about it. I guess that is what is meant by "big tent" Republicans.

That is why we encourage a third party, or even more. It, they, would not be hostage to party politics. What should be said would be said, given even a minor, but national, voice.

Anyone know of a dependable picture framer in the Richmond-Chesterfield-Chester area? I've something of a conservative nature I want to get matted and put in a nice frame and would rather not have a lib ‘lose’ or ‘damage’ it. Thanks.

Moran in Alexandria is Representative-for-Life. Someone upthread thinks the same of Bobby Scott. Four out of six is very acceptable.

Little buyers remorse in Virginia?

This is great example of the sheep voting for the “movement” and then realize an ah shit moment.
