Sometimes a movie IS just a movie.
I saw the 3D version of “Avatar” on Friday night and loved it. Once you get past the obnoxious 3D goggles (I wear glasses), the movie is beautiful. It’s detailed and I kept wanting to see more plants and animals, especially the “DaVince Bug” as my son described it.
At the risk of defending a bland plot...a thicker one would’ve weighed down the movie. There was so much to see on a second-to-second basis that one more involved would’ve bogged it down. Cameron needed a villian so he fell back on the good ol’ “corporate military” standby, but the reasoning was so thin I forgot about it and just thoroughly enjoyed the visuals. I had no problem with 10’ blue aliens (but my favorite characters are Kermit the frog, Pilot from Farscape...) and watching them move was amazing.
Please don’t let politics keep you home. This is a must-see on the big screen, and as a loyal conservative I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I wouldn't call it 'fall back'. I have no doubt that 'production value' is top-notch ($300M can buy that) and visually stunning (40% "live", 60% CGI / motion capture) but thematically, this is merely a rehash of The Abyss (1989) (also written and directed by Cameron) of twenty years ago, only with an improved technology. It could be relatively subtle, but it's still evil military-industrial-corporate complex vs cute peaceful aliens with advanced technology.
For Cameron, it's not a fall back, it's a main theme and an "Aliens for peace vs America for war" meme.
Avatar is nine hours that I will never get back. Marine=bad and of course stupid. Yawn. This movie just sucked. Plot and script was horrible. I just hate the propaganda over and over. Everybody Should just stay at home.
We saw it Sat. Matinee and all in family loved it. Hokey in many parts, but fantastic 3D imagery. The story is simplistic and juvenile, but the telling of it via visuals was great.
