Senate health Care Debate - Live Thread
C-Span ^ | 12/19/09 | US Senate

Posted on 12/19/2009 4:34:45 AM PST by BCrago66

Right now, the Senate is voting on a procedural motion to table debate on the Defense bill - which Republicans are hoping to filibuster, in an effort to stall debate on the upcoming Health bill. Because Lieberman didn't show up today, the Republicans just need to stick together on this to prevail - without defections from Collins or Snowe.

The CBO score won’t change anything because this bill is less expensive than the original Reid bill. However, this is far from over. The abortion language is an absolute abomination. Nelson got nothing in that regard. It funds abortion unless a state legislature “opts out”. The lack of of an official public option and this abortion language is going to be a real problem in the House. Plus, voting this nonsense through late at night on Christmas Even will tick off the American people like nothing in recent memory. We all have to just keep fighting.

Mr. Reid’s amendment includes major restrictions on abortion that were intended to win support for the bill from Mr. Nelson. Under Mr. Reid’s proposal, health insurance plans are not required or forbidden to cover abortion services, but there is a major exemption that would give states power to prohibit abortion coverage in the insurance markets, or exchanges, where most health plans would be sold.

Mr. Reid’s amendment also includes a substantial increase in federal contributions to Nebraska’s costs of providing Medicaid coverage to the power.

When the bill is voted on after conference committee, can it be filibustered, or does it need a simple majority to pass?

Fox is now reporting that Nelson got a deal similar to Landrieu's. In other words, he was bought off, which I'm sure is what he wanted in the first place.

Never trust a Rat, you people.

I've been watching it. They sure didn't want that amendment read, eh? Hopefully the rat b******s will all be snowed in. It would serve them right.

It can and will be fillibustered. The conference report can’t be changed, however. It’s a pure up or down vote. The question is what the House will do. Last I heard the conference committee will meet on Friday and the House will want major changes. Then, each chamber votes again. Lots of voting to go before Obamacare becomes law.

The utter irony is that two days ago Nelson said his vote was not for sale. FOX is discussing openly that he received concessions for his state. He’s worse than a whore. A whore makes her living in a direct way- no subterfuge.

I hate them, God help me, I hate them. Your priest wouldn’t get too far with me, either ;)

Nelson is live now on FOX.

The Democrats have two issues: to have a bill without a public option and with abortion restrictions in it. They'll swallow them because that's the only way to grease passage through Congress. They're willing to take 90% now and get the rest later.

Nelson basically endorsed to the proposition that a baby in New York or California has less of right to live than a baby in Alabama or Utah (because in the former States, there’s no barrier for the mother to take federal money to pay the abortionist to do his grisly work.)

That’s a “principled,” “moderate” Democrat for ya.

So much for Ben Nelson and his solemn promise to the unborn.

Hey Nebraska!

Enough with the RATs (Nelson) and RINOs (Hagel)

This should teach you that it's time to get back to some good old country conservatives.

I am usually an optimist. However, on this one I feel a resigned inevitability. Everyone was sure it would not get out of the house - it did. Then everyone was sure they would not get 60 votes in the senate - they did. I have little hope that the congress will not eventually pass this monster.

It saddens me immensely. As a taxpayer, I am already shouldering many peope’s share of the burden, and am sick of it. I already pay >50% of my income in state and local taxes. Next year I will be working harder to pay for college, and that percentage will be increased. If this monster passes, I expect that tax burden to skyrocket.

As a physician, it may mean the end of my career. If a public option passes, I will retire. I will not end my career as a government employee.

Elections do have consequences, and the net leeches in society who already live off me have put the screws to me even further in the last election.
