December 18, 2009 Leaders Cut Safeguards To Salvage Copenhagen Climate Deal

Ben Webster and Sam Coates, Copenhagen

Key safeguards on climate change were sacrificed today in a desperate attempt by world leaders to achieve a compromise at the Copenhagen summit.

Gordon Brown and some other leaders prepared to stay overnight as the final stages of the negotiations were prolonged by a dispute between the US and China over remarks made by President Obama.

But reports this evening that President Medvedev of Russia had already left the talks while Japan’s Prime Minister, Yukio Hatoyama, was planning to leave later last night heightened the feeling that time was running out for a deal.

A commitment to turning the “Copenhagen Accord” into a legally binding treaty within a year was deleted from a draft of the text leaked tonight. The draft also contained only vague language on the key issues of limiting the temperature increase to 2C and cutting global emissions by 50 per cent by 2050.

The absence of any new concessions in Mr Obama’s speech to the conference cast a shadow over the day’s negotiations. Other key players, including the EU, had been expecting at least a specific contribution to a short-term climate fund and had been preparing to respond by improving their own commitments on emissions.

Mr Obama met Wen Jiabao, the Chinese Prime Minister, tonight in attempt to repair relations after Mr Wen had taken offence at his insistence on the need for reliable monitoring of every country’s emissions.

What a colossal waste of time and energy. Chalk up another disaster for that freak in the White House.

Its already dead. They may come with a feel-good statement but a treaty isn't going to happen. And an 80% cut in CO2 emissions by 2020 is a joke. The human costs of cuts that magnitude are just too high for any Western country to even enact them.

From a Reuters story-—

“””COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - As President Barack Obama labored behind closed doors to break a deadlock over efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions””””

Now how would a Reuters reporter know that Obama was laboring if he was behind closed doors????

To the contrary I suspect Obama is in a closed room with his prayer rug oriented towards Mecca.

Yeah, just dial the number you want and a few trillion dollars will make the global temperature jump up and down to our whims.

Why don't we cut out all of these middlemen out and just pay the sun to cool off. Wait a sec, it's already doing that...

The administration is a disaster. They can't even do liberal political correctness without screwing it up.

Somebody’s investment in solar cells and windmill farms is going bust. Or maybe it’s their short calls / long puts on coal companies.

A completely inept diplomat.

Even when it works in our favor

He has been the most incompetent president that we've ever had on foreign relations. Of course, there was NO reason to believe that he would make a good diplomat, because he had no foreign policy experience going into this job, and took on Joe Biden as VP to make up for that lack of experience. A complete disaster.

This has to be a massive blow to the ego of the savior. In his own mind, his words are like magic. He believes that even the most hardened naysayers, upon hearing his magical tones, will instantly bend to his will. Instead, to have his words have no effect or even offend is unimaginable. I’m sure that he still can’t believe it.

I don't think the Chinese bought his plea. They are the creditor and America is the debtor. Checkmate.

I hope Al Gore takes it up the a$$ when his leveraged bets on coal companies, predicated on driving them to firesale prices, come unglued.

It's kind of like a person pleading after a bad job interview. Desperation does not look good on a resume.

Why would POS er, POTUS Barry think the chicoms will agree to monitoring when they have no respect for the rule of law. Pirated movies, counterfeit designer fashions, bootleg Windows 7 copies, etc. The Chicoms are laughing in the fool’s face as he begs for their co-operation.
