Times (UK): Leaders could delay departure from Copenhagen as new drafts show progress
Times Online (UK) ^ | December 18, 2009 | Ben Webster, Environment Editor and Sam Coates in Copenhagen

Gordon Brown and other world leaders have been asked to stay overnight to break the deadlock in the Copenhagen climate summit as leaked drafts of the political agreement showed progress on some of the key issues.

President Obama may also delay his departure, which had been pencilled in for this evening, giving the talks a fresh lease of life.

Drafts of the agreement, which has been named the "Copenhagen Accord", are emerging every two or three hours. Paragraphs are being added or deleted each time, making it impossible to be sure what will be in the final text.

Mr Brown has confirmed he has a "Plan B" in case the talks fail after claims that the Chinese took huge offence at parts of Mr Obama's speech.

The Prime Minister said there were two major stumbling blocks to an agreement - the nature of the long term climate commitment and the way the international community can verify that countries keep their climate promises.

The Prime Minister confirmed he was thinking about staying an extra night, but said he would not make a final decision until after the third meeting with 30 world leaders currently underway.

But UK diplomatic sources confirmed there had been a major setback after China took huge offence at remarks by Mr Obama over the need to independently monitor every country carbon emissions.

From the article:

In his speech the President said: "Without any accountability, any agreement would be empty words on a page" - remarks the Chinese interpreted as an attempt to humiliate them, prompting Wen Jiabao, the Chinese Premier, to return to his hotel.

Is anyone else starting to get the feeling that this whole Copenhagen ‘blow up’ is nothing but stage craft so that Obama can make it look like he has ‘saved the day’ in the end? Obama stays..they reach an agreement..they steal what little is left of our money....the globull scam continues.

Could be,...he and Pelosi are both there,...they both operate in that manner....

************************EXCERPT from the Article*******************************

The commitment to “fast start” finance has been increased from $10 billion by 2012 to $10billion each year for three years from 2010 to 2012.

The draft retains the pledge of $100 billion by 2020 and says this money will come from a “wide variety of sources, public and private…including alternative sources of finance”.

However, it does not say what proportion would be additional to existing overseas aid commitments. This is a key issue for developing countries, which fear aid will be repackaged as climate finance and they would be no better off overall.

China, India and Brazil have walked out. They represent half the world’s population.

Reports are that Obama has no intention of staying another night. He represents half the money.

Its over.

I think the trick is to look at what the Euroweenies have in asset/financial holdings and where. This talk about helping "poor nations" smells more like a money laundering operation for Europeans to snitch pledged funds right back to themselves, with the "poor" countries as cover.

Another slant on Chavez from Wednesday...Video & text at Gateway Pundit:

Chavez Tells Copenhagen Summit “Capitalism Is the Road to Hell” – Gets Standing Ovation

****************************EXCERPT************************

“Capitalism is the road to hell.”

Chavez has never met a microphone to which he didn’t have something to say. Wednesday was no different as he stormed through two centuries of economic theory, bounced around the globe and invoked the teachings of Brazilian liberation theologist Leonardo Boff, a champion of the poor who warned of the folly of seeking happiness through material wealth.

“I would exhort the government and the people of the earth … to say that if the destructive nature of capitalism exists, let’s fight against it and make it obey us,” he said. “If capitalism resists, then we have to give battle against capitalism and open our way to save mankind.”

But, the Venezuelan leaders attacks on capitalism did not bother the leftist representatives at the summit meeting.
They gave him a rousing ovation.
Andrew Bolt reported:

President Chavez brought the house down.

The point is no one really wants it. There's not going to be legally binding goals and no nation will accept any limitation on its sovereignty. The Copenhagen turkey is dead.

This from Reuters,...H/T to Drudge may be later:

UN denies asking leaders to stay on in Copenhagen

*************************EXCERPT*******************************

18 Dec 2009 15:57:04 GMT

Source: Reuters
(Recasts with U.N. denial)

COPENHAGEN, Dec 18 (Reuters) - The United Nations denied asking world leaders to extend their stay in Copenhagen because of deadlock at a U.N. climate summit meant to end on Friday.

Earlier, European Union Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas had said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had asked people not to leave on Friday night. United Nations spokeswoman Marie Okabe said this was not the case.

The Copenhagen turkey is dead.

One can only hope. What I fear is the Western nations
will end up trying to follow some “agreement” while
China and other nations will ignore it.

It’s just too bad Obama didn’t use Reagan’s words....

Trust, but verify! That would have shocked the crap out
of them.

Obama knew that without a binding commitment from China and India, there's no way the Senate would pass a cap n trade bill.

He isn't going to sink what's left of his political capital into a lost cause.
