I don't know that I have a "heck of a lot" in common with them, but I guess our families both have roots north of Hadrian's Wall.
Mine are right on the north side of it in Middlebie Parish. The town of Lockerbie is there.
They love staying at Balmoral and dressing up in Kilts and attending highland games.
The Queen and Prince Charles actually prefer Scotland to England, and spend any time they absolutely don’t have to be anywhere else North of the Border. They probably identify more as Scottish than English.
The late Queen Mother once met an old South Afrikanner Boer War Veteran who told her how he ‘hated the English’ for having subjugated his country, to which her reply was ‘Oh yes, we Scots feel almost exactly the same’.
The sheer Scottishness of the Royal Family is grossly underestimated by people outside the UK..
I've seen various references here and there about the royal family's affection for Scotland. Seen pics and videos of them in Scotland from time to time, too.
I guess I'm not a real royal watcher, because I never got the impression that they had that strong of a bond with the place.
Succeeds at what?
At being a stable structure for the appointment of a Head of State in a sovereign parliamentary democracy.
That is just wrong.I know it...yet I can't help but laugh out loud at that one!
I quite agree with you view that the POW gets a bad rap from most Gringos. We do remember our experiences with a King who had gone around the bend. It seems to me that he gets his annoying public traits from his father, not from his mother.
Your assessment is correct, no doubt. The Queen must scale back and if she does not do so, nature will do it for her. One advantage to the Royal Firm is that William has rock star qualities and can fill in quite nicely, especially once he is married. ERII can do as VR did for years, rule out of the public eye. The Firm is not about to tinker with succession, there is too much danger that that could lead to republicanism. So the POW will succeed and enjoy a short reign. If people remain enamored with PW, then they will be willing to accept the reign of his father.
I do hope the institution survives. Rolling back the excesses of socialist governments in the UK may require the skills and efforts of a strong King.
