Slightly OT, but if those lottery tickets had won, wouldn’t the police have known that they came from the scene of the crime? I’m thinking those things have serial numbers.

Lottery tickets from a murder scene aren’t going to be useful for much besides more evidence. Somehow I think collecting your winnings would be fraught with peril.

Yes and yes. These types of street criminals, often operating with IQs in the 70s, don't put much thought into their plans. They act impulsively, like animals, stealing things that are stupid to steal and unnecessarily inflicting violence on their victims when it makes more sense to just leave them alive. It's unlikely they spent more than a couple of minutes planning this crime and no planning whatsoever on their getaway and what they'd do with their loot. That's one of the reasons these type of criminals tend to get quickly apprehended.
