n a room filled with hundreds of supporters and local leaders, the Boy Scouts of America today unveiled its plans for a world-class, national center of scouting excellence in the New River Gorge region of West Virginia. The site will serve as a premier Scouting destination, offering a new high-adventure base and national leadership programs and will become the permanent home of the National Scout Jamboree.
The BSA's selection of the 10,600-acre site near Beckley was chosen after an extensive, nationwide process that lasted more than 18 months aimed at finding the perfect location for realizing the vision of a national center of Scouting excellence. The development of the site is made possible by a $50 million gift, the largest in BSA history, from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation.
The new site, to be named "The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve," will help the BSA fulfill its mission of serving America's youth for another 100 years, providing character-building opportunities, a respect and appreciation for the outdoors, physical fitness, and leadership development. With its extensive and diverse program offerings, the site will become a pinnacle of the Scouting experience.
"Today is a great day for Scouting. Thanks to the generosity of the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the development of The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve will be a source of fun, adventure, and discovery for hundreds of thousands of Scouts and leaders for generations to come," said Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca. "As we prepare to enter another century of service, this announcement demonstrates that Scouting is as relevant and vital today as it was when our journey began."

My son (who just passed his board of review for 1st Class)
is going to the National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill this summer.
Philmont East?
Great place! The Gauley and the New River are awesome runs.
My son is a 2nd yr Webelo and has set a long term goal to obtain as many palms after his Eagle rank as possible. To obtain all of them, he will have to make Eagle by his 13th birthday. Personally, I think that is a tad pushing it but hey, you have to support your kids when they are doing good things.
Anyway, can you provide any recommendations on the path for 1st Class? I know the swim test is going to be problematic for him so we are signing him up for classes. Anything else to consider?
Really cool.
My almost Star and WebelosII sons are pretty excited. We’re moving to within a couple hundred miles of the new high adventure base.
TC,
All I can advise is “don’t rush it.” Take some time in T-2-1 to have your son be sure to learn his skills, not just tie the knot and move on.
Well, now you’ve done it. Here we’ve been fighting to keep the beauty and goodness of our state quiet, and you advertise it all over the world. Do you really wish all those liberal environ-mental whackjobs coming here and ruining it? So far we’ve managed to keep a low profile. I really do want to keep it that way.
Don’t anybody believe these pictures, they are all photoshopped. You would not like WV. Nothing here but mountaineers and welfare dependents. Just ignore us and go someplace else.
:)
Of course (((((((Hugs)))))))
This is outstanding. A Philmont for the east. Very, very exciting.
