I know these comments are not malicious. But most attractive women in the workplace have felt the frustration of only being viewed as a pretty face with no brain behind it.

My concern is that it plays into the Left's goal of portraying Sarah Palin as being no more than that, too.

Seriously, would they take a picture of Obama or Biden on the beach shirtless and then place it on Newsweek,Time etc and discuss politics. Absolutely not. Total double standard but this plays to women and it was a political mistake by Newsweek.

Absolutely. Imagine even a picture of Hillary in casual clothing. It wasn't a mistake though. They're still trying to perpetuate the myth that Palin is a lightweight. If they can prop up someone like Nancy Pelosi into a heavyweight then...

She signed the release for Runner's World. Those releases are usually pretty much in favor of the publication. When she signed it I'm sure she didn't think it would show up some time later, without her prior approval, on the cover of Newsweek. You can bet she won't sign another release without having it checked by an attorney who is familiar with such things!

I don't know what they pay these days, but 10 years ago the they would pay at least six grand for a cover photo. I know because I was working in the news photo department of a large daily newspaper. We had an event one Saturday that was going to be a national story, a kid crashed a stolen aircraft into a downtown building. One of our shooters happened to answer the phone in the photo lab that afternoon and it was a Swedish paper wanting to get a picture of the plane hanging from the window of the building. He thought he would be enterprising and he agreed to send them one for the modest fee of $500. He ftp’d the image to them and thought that was the end of it. Two days later he learned the paper had agreed to sell his photo to Newsweek for, IIRC, six grand. But when they found out it had already been published by the Swedish paper they were very angry and canceled the order! If it had been anyone but this guy he would have been out on his ear. He's an excellent photographer and they gave him a pass for that little trick. He wasn't so lucky next time and was fired a few months after that.

I don't know why, but when I saw the photo of the kid and read the story, I started getting teary eyed. How tortured inside must this kid have been to do such a thing? I have a son around his age...so that may have had something to do with it.

Yes, it was in Tampa. He was a flight student at an airport across the bay. He had been taken to the airport by his grandmother and was sent out to pre-flight the aircraft. Without warning he cranked up and took off without even talking to the tower. He flew first to MacDill AFB where he spent some time in the area of the flight line where several KC-135 tankers were on the ground. A Coast Guard helicopter that happened to be in the area was sent to try to communicate with him. He refused to acknowledge them and flew from MacDill toward downtown Tampa. He flew straight into a 40 story building and died instantly. The absolute miracle was that there was no fire. The firefighters in the office where the plane ended up were talking about how the fuel tanks had ruptured and fuel was all over the place and draining down into the walls below the crash site. A single spark would have led to a very serious high rise fire.

I was working the photo lab that afternoon and heard the Coast Guard helicopter hovering over our building. Being an aviation fanatic I went up to the next floor and out onto the balcony to see the helicopter. It was only about 100 feet from the balcony. While I was standing there admiring the site, and envying the guy who was sitting in the open door another employee came out the door and asked "can you see it from here?" I asked see what and he yelled in my ear, "The plane crash!" It was very loud and windy right there under the helicopter. I had no idea what he was talking about but looked across the river toward downtown and there it was! The plane's tail and several feet of fuselage was dangling out a window on the 20th floor. At first I thought it was a commercial being made, but then the fire crews started arriving.

As soon as I went back down to the photo lab I called the shooter who was on duty, he was doing a golf tournament in North Tampa, and told him he should hot foot it back to town. I then took my camera, I was in the lab that day, and went back up on the balcony and started taking pictures. The wind was blowing pretty hard and the wreckage was swinging back and forth. There was a fear it would break loose and fall to the street below. The first firefighters on the scene secured it and ended that threat.

One can now understand the apparent unreasoning dislike by some liberal women of the media and entertainment industry. The picture of the Perkster (Katie Couric), as cheerleader does show an attractive young person. (flame away). Alas for the Perkster she may still retain some attraction- if one could forget her personality which could be said as sometime rather "spiteful".

She does not come close to Sarah Palin. These women are deep down, a throw back to a primitive species.

Your “outrage” over the incorrect (and IMHO distasteful use of the flag as a “prop”) is misdirected at Newsweek. (They didn’t originate the photo, nor did they direct Gov Palin to pose while leaning on the flag.)

In actuality, Gov Palin should have had better sense than to participate in a photo shoot with a flag draped across a table (a clear violation of flag protocol) and secondly not to have then leaned on the flag with her elbow planted on it.

Geez, I’ve known those things weren’t proper since I was a cub scout at age 10.
