Decorated Marine veteran Nick Popaditch on Tuesday announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in the 51st Congressional District seat held by Democrat Bob Filner.
Nicknamed Gunny Pop, Popaditch served two separate stints in the Marines. He was a tank commander during the Persian Gulf war and honorably discharged in 1992 after six years.
Tiring of civilian life, he rejoined the Marines in 1995. A widely circulated photograph after the fall of Baghdad in 2003 shows the tank commander and platoon sergeant smoking a cigar in front of the statue of Saddam Hussein just before his unit helped tear it down.
Popaditch, 42, was awarded the Silver Star for combat actions during the battle for Fallujah. During that battle he was blinded in one eye by a rocket-propelled grenade to the head and given a medical retirement.
He announced his candidacy at events in Chula Vista and El Centro. He was introduced at both events by retired Rep. Duncan Hunter.
Since returning home, Ive seen our liberties under assault and our childrens future being sold away by an expanding government that limits individual freedom and responsibility, Popaditch said in. his announcement.
Filners 51st District runs the length of the California-Mexico border and is 48 percent Democratic to 27 percent Republican. The Chula Vista Democrat was re-elected in 2008 with 73 percent of the vote.

Damn, 2010 can’t come fast enough. LOL
Hopefully, America will soon see why WE NEED Hunter!
Amen!!
And I’m happy to be on the ground floor of that movement, along with some fellow patriots! LOL
Go, Gunny, go!
From his webiste:
I love my country. I spent the majority of my adult life in her service in the United States Marine Corps until I was wounded in action and medically retired. I’ve seen the greatness of freedom experienced for the first time by people who’ve never known it, and gained a greater appreciation for our own liberties. My freedom was bought and paid for by our Founding Fathers and again by my father’s generation. The chain of custody has been handed down to me and my generation to secure our liberties for our children and for theirs.
Since returning home, I’ve seen our liberties under assault and our children’s future being sold away by an expanding government that limits individual freedom and responsibility. Our Founders knew that the larger the government, the smaller the individual. Irresponsible spending, intrusive regulations, and a growing deficit are crippling our children’s future. Indecision in the face of our enemies, who seek to destroy our way of life, and a lack of resolve in securing our borders, weakens us as a nation. This is not the country I will leave to my children.
It is time for me to redeploy again and “Take the Hill”. I hope you will join me.

Yes, with the help of a few good men. Good thread, thanks. Now, if we could fast forward time by at least six months I’d be a happy camper.
Limited Government: Government solutions to everyday problems are not free, efficient, or effective. Every law or regulation, by definition, reduces your individual freedom. Although our Constitution guarantees a limited Federal government, Washington, D.C. is expanding out of control and would be unrecognizable to our Founding Fathers.
One of the reasons for this is because Washington is run by politicians who compromise their personal values by voting for major bills full of earmarks and riders, which are often unrelated to the underlying subject. These massive spending and regulatory earmarks and riders are like parasites, sucking the lifeblood out of your country. And who is stuck with the massive debt and loss of freedoms? You, the taxpayer.
My Solution: As your Congressman, I pledge a vote of No on any bill that contains earmarks or unrelated riders, regardless of the party who attaches them. I will work to scrub these from our legislation and bring clean bills up for honest votes, or I will not support them.
Strong National Defense: America stands alone as the worlds champion of freedom against tyranny. September 11, 2001, demonstrated unequivocally that there are those in this world who hate liberty and our way of life. I am not interested in understanding them or capitulating to them. Did President Franklin Roosevelt ask Americans on December 8, 1941, to understand why the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor or learn how to work with them? No. One of my primary duties will be to make sure my fellow Americans are as safe and strong as possible. This isnt done by opening dialogue or any other euphemisms for cowardice in the face of our enemies. It is done, only when absolutely necessary, with aircraft carriers and main battle tanks.
My Solution: As your Congressman I pledge to rebuild our military to pre-1990 levels, which is an absolute necessity in todays dangerous world.
Secure Borders: Until we control our northern and southern borders and know who is crossing them, talk about immigration reform is just that: talk. Until we enforce our immigration laws in our cities, immigration reform means nothing. A lone border patrolman was murdered last summer here in our community. There is no excuse for this happening in our country.
My Solution: As your Congressman, I will reject any legislation regarding immigration reform that does not also guarantee the completion of the border fence, and I will propose legislation to cut ALL Federal funding to any city that is operating as a so-called sanctuary city. Finally, as one of my first priorities, I will work to increase funding to put more border patrol agents where they are most needed: on our borders protecting our national security.
Well, the tide seems to be turning against the marxists, but we are in a race against time.
