S. Korea denies rumors of N. Korean moves near tense west sea border

By Sam Kim

SEOUL, Nov. 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korea on Wednesday denied unidentified rumors that a pair of North Korean naval boats approached the western maritime border where the navies of the two countries exchanged gunfire a day earlier.

"There is no particular situation developing. The waves are high, also forcing fishing vessels to stay off the waters," Park Sung-woo, spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters.

The rumors that two North Korean vessels closed in on the boundary early Wednesday morning had circulated in South Korea's financial and government circles.

On Tuesday, the navies of the Koreas engaged for the first time in seven years near the border in the Yellow Sea. The North Korean patrol boat retreated in flames while the South Korean side suffered no casualties, officials in Seoul said. It was the third such skirmish south of the Northern Limit Line after 1999 and 2002.

"There has been no sign of retaliatory moves by the North," Kim Sung-hwan, a South Korean presidential security aide, told Yonhap by telephone early Wednesday. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak had expressed concern over another possible attack by the North.

Won Tae-jae, South Korea's defense ministry spokesperson, said he could not confirm media reports that one North Korean sailor had been killed and three wounded in the battle that lasted two minutes.

"The reports carried material that cannot be confirmed," he said.

Koreans have a long memory and they know how to wait. Should be interesting to see when and how the North responds.

A fresh reports says that, in the firefight yesterday, S. Korean vessel's Gatling guns went off in addition to 40mm auto-cannon. So NK vessel was showered with 4,000 rounds in total.

So far, it appears that a lone N. Korean vessel made a probing incursion, pretending to accidentally stray into S. Korean waters. It sat around long enough in SK waters to draw warning shots from SK navy. It reportedly fired back while starting to go back to their side, a kind of fade way shot. So I suppose NK vessel accomplished its mission. Now the question is how Chia Head would respond to this resolute response from SK. I am sure he is gauging carefully reactions from outsiders. Media reports, government responses, public opinions of SK, U.S., China, and world in general. If he does not see any weakness or wedges he can exploit, he may fold for now. If he does see one, he will go ahead with follow-up plans which I am sure are fully prepared in advance. Even if he folds now, he would not forget this. After certain amount of time has passed and situation has died down, he will come back at some point with another action plan of this kind, probably a more escalated version.

In a world with a competent POTUS, right about now we'd have an Ohio Class sub break surface in plain sight before it disappears again. That would communicate the message nicely.

That kind of thing makes a dictator think: It makes him wonder how many more are out there that they DIDN'T see.

Since we can't even track an Ohio Class, there's little possibility that they can.

He sacrificed an entire crew just to ‘test the waters’, so to speak. I know the system up there, but still it boggles the Western mind just how cheap life is to this man.

Trust me. Life is exceedingly cheap in N. Korea, except the life of Dear Leader Chia Head.

On the other hand, there is a rumor circulating here that NK casualties is not high, considering hail of bullets it received.

That would be nice. Sadly, in today's world, such a move would incur wrath of Goldman Sachs because it will spook the market and ruin their plan to play the market. That would be a bad thing to WH, in addition to Chicom T-bill holders shouting to Zero's big pointy ear via a hotline.:-)

i don't think that the Chicoms would mind all that much.

They do a lot of business with the ROK. War and rumours of war tend to upset business. The Chicoms have already had enough of their business upset by present economic conditions. Having Kim Jong Il get the 'fear of God and Trident MIRV's put into him might just settle him right down. Especially since he'd realise that his capital city (and military command & control) would be gone before they could ever react.

Of course you're correct about the panty waists at Goldman Sachs. Those fools never did have the ability to look beyond the next scam to see a bigger payoff.
