Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin says she will oppose the health care reform bill expected to be considered this weekend in the House.
The South Dakota Democrat says the plan falls short of her goals for health care reform and could threaten existing access to health care for many South Dakotans. Herseth Sandlin says she's also concerned it doesn't do enough to bring down the federal deficit and could affect future health care for seniors.
The House could begin consideration this weekend of the 10-year, $1.2 trillion legislation that would extend health coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and put tough new restrictions on insurance companies.
Herseth Sandlin says she is hopeful the bill can be improved by House and Senate negotiators.
...the South Dakota Democrat says the plan falls short of her goals for health care reform and could threaten existing access to health care for many...
Allow me to translate: Damn, if I vote for this, I will lost my seat in Congress, which at least gets me out of South Dakota in the winter, and I'm not taking any chances no matter what Nancy says.
Maybe she likes being in the club and wants to get re-elected.
Pelosi has the votes that she needs; so she can give a SD member a “pass”. But SD is big on federal funding too. They didn’t elect George S. McGovern for nothing.
We should have a permanent posting on this forum detailing exactly where each senator and rep stands so we can put the pressure on... Also showing who the Blue Dogs are.
I just checked wikipedia (I know, I know, but I was in a hurry). It seems Ms. Sandlin is considered to be an up-and-comer in the party. There’s talk or her running for everything for Thune’s Senate seat to one day running for the WH. Given her political pedigree (gramps was SD’s governor, grams was SD’s Sec/State, Pop was a state legislator, and her hubby was a Texas blue dog), I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
Er, I just realized your handle is “SoDak”. I’m guessing you already know lots more about Sandlin that I do. Sorry about that!
i called her office and the woman who answered said they are experiencing high call volume...i’ve called every blue dog’s office this morning...
Yesterday, she claimed to still be undecided, so I wrote her an email, and called the local office. Looks like fear of the voters can sometimes be a good motivator.
yes...her rep said point blank, she is against...

I called her office this morning too - like I have done every morning for about the last 90 days. The gal snippily said “she’s voting against.” Woo-hoo!
(I’d still like to see her defeated in ‘10).
Three others have changed from undecided to oppose. They are Frank Kratovil, Collin Peterson and Mike Ross.
