Yes. That's what concerns me. If Kay Bailey Hutchison is shocked at such a response from those who she might perceive as a moderate Muslim (the cousin being interviewed), it shows her ignorance of what we are dealing with or her unwillingness to express her disgust.
I wonder if Shep simply missed an excellent opportunity to ask a follow-up question because he wanted to ask other things or if he didn't want to take the conversation there because of his unwillingness to state a few obvious things about the religion of peace.

I agree. It is like claiming to be shocked because a bear stole your lunch, or a cougar ate your pet lamb.
One is shocked by the outrageously umexpected or out of place; one is disgusted with the filthiness of the filthy.
