I noticed that also "Fred Hayek" mentioned it earlier in the thread. He's in Minnesota, my physicians are unfortunately in urban and extremelt leftist northern Virginia. Hayek: are you in an HMO, too? Is the gun ownership question pretty standard in your area?
FYI... I just found some articles on the matter:

I've always answered, "that's nobody's business." My regular physician as well as the kids' pediatrician both seemed to understand fully that it crosses the line.
It us pretty much a standard question from any practitioner associated with the major clinic networks: Fairview, Allina, and others. I am not part of an HMO, however, I use Blue Cross/Blue Shield as part of a small business plan since I am self employed.
Another standard question I get is “Do you feel safe in your relationships”. Now what is that supposed to mean! My relationships in Minnesota are BUSINESS ONLY. My real home is TEXAS!
I am stunned that any doctor would ask this question!! Good grief! It would be hilarious indeed if doctors here in Louisiana began asking this question as 99% of the population are avid hunters!!
