Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. {or II} (and yes, he was using that name at that point in his "career") attended the Columbia School of General Studies, which was more or less a walk-in, pay-your-money-take-the-course operation; night courses, seminars, etc., taught by a random collection of adjunct professors, the usual cast of NYC schnorrers, and any unemployed communists available. (Categories somewhat interchangeable)
However, if you jumped through enough academic hoops, voilá, Columbia College would actually issue your genuine Columbia bachelor's degree. But, no genuine Columbia undergrad would be caught dead talking to the odd night crew of characters from General Studies, although more than a few would use the GS courses to meet a requirement, which was allowed.
I myself, moi, took a course there because of a scheduling problem at my small men's college, and never even laid eyes on a genuine Ivy League Columbia College guy, although I did know quite a few, or apparently at least more than BHO, Jr., (or II).
More interesting than BHO, Jr.'s career at Columbia is his relationship at the time with a fellow named William Ayers, and the sister of his girlfriend (the one who was not blown up in the bomb accident) ... who was a professor at Barnard at the time.
At this time, our putative POTUS was living with a group of Pakistani students around the corner from Bill's place. None of the Paki* roomates has ever been interviewed. Be interesting, I guess, since at this time the "Trip to Pakistan*" took place, it is rumoured, on that Indonesian passport, which is part of the inviolable Obama file.
Also interesting would be an investigative media exploration of his relationship with some heavy duty Black Power chaps implicated in armored car robberies and various other revoltionary hi-jinks, one of whom was surnamed Odinga. Move along, Travis, nothing there.

I suspected that he attended General Studies, but never have seen that written anywhere. Is this your theory, or did you see it stated elsewhere? Also, I had never heard that the College would issue degrees to GS students. Are you sure that this is correct? I am a Columbia College ‘78 graduate.
I agree that General Studies was a world unto itself, and that there was very little commingling of students from both schools. If he went to GS, it would be even more unusual that he would have transferred from Occidental. Generally, people in GS were working full time or had other things going on besides full-time academia. What was Obama doing?
