" "Why do black and Hispanic conservatives vote for Democrats?" the answer is that the belief that Republicans and the right are racist is so poisonous to the "brand" that those groups want nothing to do with Republicans or the right. That's sad, bad, and counter-productive.

Is that why Colin Powell voted for Obama? I just figured it was because he is a black racist. Thanks for setting me straight.

There are certainly blacks who voted for Obama because he was black just as there are certainly whites who didn't vote for him because he was black. As I've pointed out elsewhere, no more than half of the blacks who normally vote Republican voted for Obama. Quite a few of the blacks who normally vote Republican voted Republican in 2008 despite Obama. That said, this is irrelevant to my point which was about the number of blacks and other minorities (including Asians) who generally vote Democrat regardless of who is on the ticket. Why would Asians, who are often economically as well off or even better off than whites, and who suffer from affirmative action even more than whites do in California state colleges, not vote Republican?
