Using some simple math, you would need roughly 1,190 party size balloons full of helium to lift about 40 lbs.. This thing was 20 feet by 5 feet in a saucer shape. No way did this kid get lifted in the first place.

A 20 foot wide circular balloon that is an average of 2 1/2 feet thick could hold 785 cubic feet of helium, enough to lift about 49 pounds. (1190 party balloons if each holds 2/3 of cubic foot of helium)

I have this theory that he and his brother were trying to get the thing in the air, but when they loosened the tie downs, it just sat there and then when the kid jumped out, it took off and so did he.

yes, but not at 6,000 feet altitude in Colorado, Just read the kid was found. I took a guess he might never have been in that balloon. Reading some stuff about this family, Im wondering if it was some sort of hoax.
