I can appreciate her perspective :)
Babies usually start on pureed foods at about 6-7 months, but that doesn’t make nursing irrelevant. It is by far the best kid-quieter in the world, short of narcotic sedation.
I once breastfed my son at age 2 when husband and kid and I flew cross-continent. I did not make an issue of it, had a nicely-contructed, modest nursing outfit on; and the only thing anybody “noticed” was that here was a child who went through take-off, hours of flight, and landing without running around, squirming, or screaming.
Nursing moms whose whose toddlers’ nutritional requirements are met by other foods, still often nurse at night for peaceful bedtimes.
Having made that point, let me also say that this Vermont mom didn’t handle things very well. She should have smiled, said “Oh, Thank You!”, accepted the blankie, and made some reasonable gesture of cooperation. I doubt anybody would have raised any further objections if all were thereafter blessedly peaceful and quiet.
It’s almost always women who complaing about mothers breastfeeding. Makes me wonder why those particular women find it disturbing? Did they bottle-feed? Are the jealous because they don’t have children? Do they think their own men will be attracted to another woman because they see her breasts?
What is it?
Depends on how you do it.
Yes, I was thinking I’d call the mall police to throw out the lecherous man.
But he probably just didn’t get enough love and attention as a baby, and maybe his wife detests him and won’t let him have any at home.
WOuldn’t it be easier and more direct if he just walked up and grabbed her breasts?
Generally, children stop breastfeeding NOT because it is "time" for the children to stop, but because the mother is too busy or it is too bothersome to continue.
From a breastfeeding web site:
The natural time of weaning will vary from child to child. In cultures where children are allowed to nurse as long as they want it has been found that natural weaning takes place between three and four years of age. Extended nursing seems to be the human norm.
Most women would be scorned here in the states before they ever reached that age. My wife stopped much earlier, but only because of persistant breast infections.
She was covered up, in a window seat, ON AN AIRPLANE.
Have you ever been in an airplane? If you sit in your seat, can you even SEE any other passenger other than the person sitting right next to you? Can you see any breasts, covered or otherwise, unless you actively work to do so?
It’s like she crawled into a cubbyhole, but people followed her in, stood in front of her, stared at her, and then complained at what they were seeing.
It is clear a lot of people here are completely hung up on the idea of seeing a woman’s breast — and in my opinion, the problem is THEIR problem, not the woman. She’s feeding her child, not trying to get you in the sack, so get your mind out the gutter and stop staring.
If the child was there to see the dentist, it could be the breast calmed him.
Have you read the same comments I have on this thread? THe only nazis here are the anti-breast nazis, who seem to be horrified that a woman has something better to do with a breast than to let them suck at it for their own gratification.
Or maybe you would have too much common decency to actually do that, because you aren’t a lecherous old man.
I’d like to think that’s the real reason you don’t act like a petulant child.
Sort of like propping the lavatory door open while you pee.
Which is why if I saw a person like you lecherously staring at a breastfeeding mom, I’d get the mall police. A person who would harass a woman feeding her child could be unstable in other ways as well.
You compare breastfeeding to taking a crap?
it seems you have already arrived, so we don’t have to alert you. :-)
Common sense does take a village, and a city, and a state — and each family in each generation after generation — working 24/7/365 incessantly and constantly to develop.
How long should a mother breastfeed?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mother and baby desire. The World Health Organization recommends continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.
Ignorance is sometimes just ignorance, but can always be corrected with information.
MAybe nobody else DID witness it, because the woman was being discrete.
There are a lot of people, some here at FR, who are just freaked out by the idea of breastfeeding, and think that women who breastfeed should be mocked and ridiculed.
I don’t know why they are so threatened by a natural act, or why they hate the sight of breasts, but they certainly are vocal and crude about it.
It’s hard enough being a real mother to your kids these days, what with everybody telling you to drop the kids in day care and go back to work. Breastfeeding of course ties you to the kids, so I know why the feminists and the left hate it, but I can’t fathom why conservatives jump on the bandwagon.
