I don’t think Michael Dell has EVER built a plant unless he has strongarmed a sweetheart deal out of the local taxpayers.
He’s been doing it around here since... well, since he started in business.

Well, at least the good citizens of W-S will have a lovely tombstone of a plant to admire.

once he taxpayer benefit is gone they close the factory?
I dont blame him... business is business
He could do something better for PR- but the bottom line is the bottom line and government screwed with the market mechanics when they gave him a huge tax benefit

Wow! This is devastating for that area! There’s going to be a ripple affect from this to all of the shops and jobs in the area that depend on the Dell plant for their own production. I remember the folks in NC moving Heaven and Earth to get that plant built there.
This is a bit of a shock, because it hasn’t been there very long at all. Not even 6 years, I don’t think.
Very sad news....

Hey NC, how is that Hope and Change working out for you? This must be the green shoots the administration was talking about.

2005. So barely four years.
To: southernnorthcarolina
The state of NC bent over backwards to get Dell. They gave Dell every tax break possible and incentive they could think of. The whole project has been a failure. Dell never lived up to any of its promises of employment and such.
How about this: Quit giver incentives to attract businesses. Lower all the damn taxes for everyone and then you won’t need to give incentives.
The fact that you have to give incentives means that your taxes are too high.
IDIOTS.

It's ALWAYS a Bad Thing when a government grants an advantage or favor to a single company.
Make your city or state a nice place to do business (lower taxes, fewer regulations, better infrastructure) and let the companies take care of the rest themselves.

Dell opened the assembly plant in 2005 and was offered a massive incentives package valued at $305 million if it met hiring and investment goals. Let me guess: The inventives expire on December 31, 2009. Now, why would I think that??

Heckuva lot of wisdom in those 15 words. Too bad the politicians are too nuanced to understand it.

Not like most of these companies are not hiring, they are just not doing it here.

"More chinese communists will have jobs."
And fluffy new turbans as a bonus for Mujibur and Rajeef in Tech Support Mumbai to thank them for their loyal service.
Why anyone would buy a Dell is a mystery to me. Junky tacky crashy unreliable crap, in my experience, poorly supported by incomprehensible script-reading trolls.
To: southernnorthcarolina
Hmmm, so Dell got $305 million for a promise of 905 jobs for four years. My math works that out to $84,254 per worker per year. So Dell got NC to pay all of its salary cost (and then some). Wow. Just wow. NC got taken.
