The malignant cell case does sound like a good prospect for targeting the telomerase. Since most cancers are occuring in senior citizens, the issue of impact of germinal cell lines is reduced.

The use of telomerase inhibitors might be problematic for the various adult stem cell/progenitor cell lines.

Leonard Hayflick, mentioned in the article, appears to be the author of this link about telomeres. An apparently identical 14 paragraph piece by him is found at Answers.com. That link has an illustration of the telemere without all of the other stuff to be downloaded at Answers.com.
