In my opinion:
Gates is a putz . . .
Obama is incompetent . . .
McChrystal is experienced, informed, and probably correct on Afghanistan . . .
but . . .
McChrystal should be fired. He’s a General. Obama is his direct superior. McChrystal went ON FOREIGN SOIL, publicly denounced his superior, and effectively undermined the authority of the President.
If a General did this during the Bush administration he’d have been gone in 24 hours. Does the name Gen. Peter Pace ring a bell? In fact, I think Obama’s lack of action in this matter is indicative of his lack of CEO experience and shows he’s no more willing to stand up to his own subordinates than the thug despots of Iran, Korea, Libya, etc.
Fight to win or GTFO!!!!
How did McChrystal undermine the authority of the President? He was put in charge of Afghanistan by the CINC, to carry out the CINC's own counterinsurgency strategy that was put in place over six months ago.
The general's assessment of the resources needed to carry out that mission has been gathering dust for over six weeks.
During that time, we have suffered more losses in the conduct of the CINC's mission.
A combat leader's first duty is to complete the mission. To complete the mission, you must have adequate resources, most of all providing the proper leadership, guidance, and support to your soldiers.
President Obama is failing miserably as CINC. GEN McChrystal is doing his job.
