President Barack Obama returned to the public fight over health care Monday, telling a group of supportive doctors that he is optimistic Congress will pass a revamp even though "there are some details to be worked out."
"I'm confident we are going to get health reform passed this year," Mr. Obama said.
In an eight-minute speech to Doctors for America at the White House, the president sketched the principles behind his proposed overhaul, including changes that would keep insurance companies from dropping coverage when people get sick or denying care for pre-existing conditions. He also outlined a proposal to address defensive medicine -- a big issue for doctors -- and provide loan forgiveness for physicians to practice in rural or underserved areas.
"Although there are still some details to be worked out, there's some general principles that I think we can have confidence in," Mr. Obama said.
But Mr. Obama didn't mention the public insurance option, which Republicans and some conservative Democrats oppose. The bill crafted by the Senate Finance Committee doesn't include the public option, and it is unclear how hard the White House will push for the provision, which is included in bills that have passed other committees.

100 doctors, hmmm, that seems about right. It will probably be the number of doctors left in the country after he gets his healthcare bill past. Oh, by the way, did anyone actually check on whether these are actual doctors or doctors like Dr. J was a doctor?
150 doctors, all clad in matching white coats! Amateur hour at its finest. Were they wearing stethoscopes and head lamps too so we’d know they were real doctors?!?
Yes, he thinks we’re morons. How can he get in front of the American people a few weeks ago in a speech to the joint houses of Congress and assure us that the public option is off the table and then secretly lobby for it now.
Has he absolutely no honesty, no honor? Clearly, he means for this change of strategy to be leaked, but will he confirm or deny this when questioned? Is Gibbs being asked about this by the press?
