Republicans Visit Honduras Despite U.S. Coup Policy

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- Honduras' coup-installed president told a U.S. congressional delegation Friday that full civil liberties would be restored within days, a spokesman for one of the lawmakers said following a meeting that challenged Washington's attempts to isolate the interim government.

Interim President Roberto Micheletti said an emergency decree limiting civil liberties, including freedom of the press and assembly, would be lifted no later than Monday, said Wesley Denton, a spokesman for South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint.

The Republican lawmakers received the assurances in a private meeting with Micheletti earlier at the presidential palace, said Denton, who spoke to the senator as he was changing planes in Miami for the return to Miami.

"DeMint and the delegation pushed him very hard on that issue ... and stressed that it was very important that civil liberties be restored," the spokesman told The Associated Press in a phone interview from Washington.

The controversial decree shuttered two broadcasters that criticized the June 28 coup that toppled President Manuel Zelaya -- although one, Radio Globo, was transmitting over the Internet after police raided its offices and confiscated equipment.

It was imposed Sunday following the return to Honduras of Zelaya, who remains holed up with supporters inside the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa.

U.S. Ambassador to Honduras Hugo Llorens had urged the interim government Friday to "immediately" reverse the decree, which prohibited gatherings of more than 20 people and allowed arrests without warrants.

"The decree of Sept. 26 damaged civil liberties like nothing else has in a long time here," Llorens told reporters. "It's just plain wrong."

“Honduras’ coup-installed president”

Even fox is now following the coup line.

Well, technically it was a military coup. It wasn’t bloody like most, but certainly follows the definition.

I don’t understand why they had to declare martial law in the country though. A political ouster of an unpopular President doesn’t seem like justification to turn the country into a police state, albeit temporarily.

Please explain how Zelaya’s expulsion was “technically” a military coup. Kindly provide the definition and the source for same.

Because they were being invaded by communists infiltrators from Venezuela, Cuba and other surrounding countries hoping to whip up enough of the underclass to change things back.

He's not "unpopular." He still has great cachet with the uneducated lower classes and (I'm sure) with the "intellectual elite" at the universities.

Certainly enough people still support him and his ambitions to cause mayhem in the country.

Just not a fan of military martial law. From what I know of the Honduran situation, a civil war was unlikely.

Seems to me both sides are horrible. One side is a communist trying to circumvent law to stay in power, the other is a military dictatorship. Thank god we don’t live in Latin America.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coup_d%27%C3%A9tat "A coup d'état (pronounced /ˌkuːdeɪˈtɑː/, us dict: kōō′·dā·tâ′), or coup for short, is the sudden unconstitutional deposition of a legitimate government" http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/coup " : a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics; especially : the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group" These are two generally recognized "definition" sources. Note the first requires an "unconstitutional" overthrow and the second requires an element of "violence". Neither were or are present. The Supreme Court and Congress of Honduras both recognized that Zelaya had forfeited the office under the Constitution. The only "coup" in this situation is Obama's bullying and El Gringo tactics.

Hold on. You are living in exciting times! What's your preference? - military martial law or an unconstitutional Manchurian Presidential ruler desperate to take down your country any way he can.

I don’t understand why they had to declare martial law in the country though... Because the Venezualan, Cuban and Guats (who support him) would have started up a revolution against the Constitutional government. There were posts here quite often that said there was no violence, no problems and that the communists were being thrown out.

Wrong you fool! It is not a "military dictatorship." Try to inform yourself before making a bigger fool of yourself.

Zelaya was removed from office by the military on the orders of the Supreme Court and the Legislature. He violated the Honduran Constitution specifically and intentionally.

He was warned by the Supreme Court that his actions were in violation of the Constitution and he chose to ignore the court and continue to pursue his goal of being President for life.

Do you even read the news or do your just listen to Air America?

I’d say they followed their Constitution - that would not make it a coup.

Honduras' coup-installed president told a U.S. congressional delegation

Dear FOX staff.

Please review, and try to grasp, the definition of "Coup."

It's not really that complicated.

A "coup" can't accrue against an [corrupt] individual.
It must be addressed at the substance of government, its entire structure.

Well, then, sir, you are ignorant of the definition.
The military simply carried out the decisions of the supreme court and the legislature of Honduras.

A little learning is a dangerous thing...

You are clearly a fresh soldier in the Zelaya propaganda machine. A troll, a rock, a worse than senseless thing.

It would be a waste of time to explain the obvious.

The 20% of the marxist Honduran population is violent, and they drive the need for public order.

I suggest talking directly to the people of Honduras, and ignore Obambi and his marxist minions.

The world communists including Obama who hate freedom of the people as stated by the American Constitution and the God of Israel and His Son Jesus Christ, are trying to help the communist Zelaya, who tried to fix the elections and was put out by the Supreme Court of Honduras for his treachery against the rule of law. Obamanation of the left who are hateful monsters.
May the good Lord Jesus destroy the hateful left wing movements worldwide and come and rule the world from the little hills of Zion as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Until then, may He destroy all left wing political powers that keep all nations in poverty and depression by destroying human rights.
The left wing of America are very evil people indeed.
