While I enjoy poking fun at the French, as much as anyone — I've never liked the way this picture is used.

The guy is near tears, because Hitler's army is marching triumphantly down his street. Deep sadness (and, possibly, plans for revenge) are reactions you'd expect of any patriot, in such circumstances. The guy likely served in WW1 (almost every male his age would have) — any veteran would be upset that his sacrifice (and those of millions more) was for naught.
