Why would the Crusades be considered an inappropriate response to militant Islam?

I don’t get why so many people act like the Crusades were an unjust action against innocent, harmless Middle Easterners who were just minding their own business.

The muslims were on the verge of conquering Europe. Considering what we know about muslim behavior, strong action was imperative.

If the Crusades didn’t happen, likely I’d be wearing a burka now.

No thanks.

...and on their way to the Middle East, the Crusaders stopped in the Rhineland and massacred thousands of innocent, harmless Jews who were just minding their business.
