The main difference here is that the Pacific basin has long had major tsunami warning assets and awareness of the potential for bad tsunamis. In 2004, the Indian Ocean did not.

ONE News

Civil Defence organisations all over New Zealand are issuing tsunami warnings after an earthquake off Samoa.

Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence is telling residents to keep away from beaches and residents of Te Kaha, East Cape have been instructed to go to high ground.

Police at Tolaga Bay are on high alert and expecting waves before 10am.
