Aristocrats can afford car-free days

In the early 1800s, when railroads first began to spread across Great Britain, the Duke of Wellington reportedly sneered that this innovation would "only encourage the common people to move about needlessly."

For last week's World Car-Free Day, Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, channeled the Duke of Wellington, complaining about the "domination of the car" and called for a new type of society "in which we are not dependent on it to such a great extent for our daily needs."

I call for Prince Charles to walk to all future speaking engagements and royal appearances. Outside. In the winter. IN HIS KILT!

True enough. Bit pet peeve of mine is areas designed so they are unsafe, even potentially deadly, to move around in without a car. There are lots of them.

Designing areas so a car is essential is just as much a government intrusion as banning use of cars would be.

Frankly, I don’t really care what the Prince is saying....our Congress is on the path to DOING something about getting Americans out of their cars - involuntarily.

Internal passports are almost impossible to administer when people have their own means of transportation. As Kerry said (on O'Reilly, right after 9-11) they're "an idea whose time has come".

Don’t you know? The serfs are supposed to remain working in the fields.

Peasant #1: “Look! A king!”
Peasant #2: “How do you know he’s a king?”
Peasant #3: “He hasn’t got sh!t all over him.”
