I always thought the standard for such occasions was the "Little Black Dress" but I am not what you call fashion conscious.
Anyhow an ex-girlfriend told me that you wear Dark Colors to a solemn occasion whether it be a funeral or a speech etc.

I remember looking for a dress for my daughter’s Sweet 16 party. She is born in January, so all we saw for the longest time was black and red, for new years, etc. We finally found a great one, midnight blue. Thank you Macy’s, but it was a quest to find it.
