Laura understands that the attention should be focused on the recipient. To wear a bright color and boldly designed outfit detracts attention away from the award and ( most important) the person receiving it.

I remember once when my mother chose not to wear a beautiful bright pink dress to her niece’s wedding. She said, “I don’t want to take attention away from my sister.” ( the bride’s mom)

Exactly! I was just going to say that a First Lady should always dress in a manner not to draw undue attention to herself. Especially when she has a huge butt and has recently gained at least 50#.

A First Lady should dress appropriately to the occasion, whatever the occasion, and not in such a way as to elicit gasps of either adoration or horror and repulsion.

“...the attention should be focused on the recipient...”

That’s it, isn’t it. Thanks for your post which makes some very good points about fashion, and dressing for occasions.

This whole ethos is almost gone, Mrs. Obama seems determined to drive it away altogether.
