This is outrageous! Although the patient would have bled out pretty fast if the vessel had been an artery, any 100+ bed hospital in the US would have had sufficient blood on had to save this young woman. Even if she had been AB neg (the most rare type), they would have had at least a couple of units on hand and would have been able to use O neg as a back up until more could arrive from the Red Cross by Highway Patrol if necessary.
I know this because I am a Medical Technologist who has been the one in Blood Bank working to save such a patient. EVERY patient, young or old, insured or not would receive this kind of care. People in the US expect this. Those who are clamoring for a national health plan have no clue what they are really asking for.
