4/16/2008 10:00:00 PM Nightclub seeks late liquor license Neighbors warn club could attract crime

By TIMOTHY INKLEBARGER Editor

Owners of a new three-story nightclub and restaurant in Logan Square got a lukewarm reception this week from neighbors concerned that their application for a 5 a.m. liquor license could bring crime into the neighborhood. The nightclub V Live, 2047 N. Milwaukee, is not set to open for at least three months, but neighbors said at a community meeting Tuesday that it’s predecessor, the OK Corral nightclub, attracted prostitution, vandalism and late night rowdiness.

Clarissa Flores, a co-owner of the V Live, said the new venue would be nothing like the OK Corral. She said the venue would include a ground level restaurant with high-end Mexican food, a second floor area for private events, and a third-floor nightclub with an estimated capacity of about 1,500. She said the team of partners working to open the club-some of whom are co-owners of the Aragon Ballroom in Uptown-has spent upwards of $9 million renovating the building.

She said the club would include infrared video surveillance inside and outside the building, and a team of about 40 to 50 security officers would patrol the building during and after events. She said that although the club has applied for a 5 a.m. liquor license, it plans to stop serving alcohol at 3 a.m. on Fridays and Sundays and at 4 a.m. on Saturdays. “There is no comparison to what we’re doing and what was here previously,” she told about 50 neighbors who attended the meeting.

Neighbor Joe Kopera said he’s most concerned about the late night crowd the club will attract. “My main thought is when you have a late liquor license and the other bars close at 2 or 3 a.m. they’re drunk already, and they’re going to be coming into our neighborhood sitting in the cars, drinking liquor and doing drugs in the car,” Kopera said.

Flores said the club’s security team would follow patrons to their vehicles at the end of the night to make sure there are problems. “How much control will the security have a block and a half from here?” Kopera asked. Johnny Elias, president of the Greater Goethe Neighborhood Association, said he believes that without a coordinated effort between the club owners, the police and the community, it’s unlikely that neighbors will support the plan.

First Ward Alderman Manny Flores (no relation) said he needs to be better convinced of the club’s security plan before giving his support to the late liquor license. Flores said he and his staff would hold another meeting in the next week to further detail the club’s proposal. Those interested in learning more can contact Flores’ office.

The Olympics are a sick, corrupt boondoggle,
and do not belong in Chicago, murder capital
of the USA .. decrepit infrastructure ..billions
in debt, along with the rest of the state.

They’re all pushing in and selling it with very
tool in the box and with their might, including
the WH. Disgusting .. and in the end, it’s still
all pay to play and continuing typical Machine
thuggery.

From the Olympics meeting at the VLive Club in July:

“There was also a plea to remember the youth and benefits that could impact them the rest of their lives. Youth are important, according to Ryan and Healey, and they have already set up World Sports Chicago. A UNION member said that he was glad to hear they were planning to use UNION members in the construction of the various venues.”

WASHINGTON—With a host city decision a few weeks away, President Obama and First Lady Michelle, in a move to bolster Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics, will host Olympians and Paralympians at the White House next Wednesday, I’ve been told.

WASHINGTON—With a host city decision a few weeks away, President Obama and First Lady Michelle, in a move to bolster Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics, will host Olympians and Paralympians at the White House next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, I’ve also learned White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett is traveling to Copenhagen to help convince International Olympic Officials to pick Chicago when they announce the 2016 games host city in Denmark on Oct. 2. Chicago is competing with Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo for the summer games.

The White House has not said yet if President Obama will also fly to Denmark for the last pitch but he is likely to if his presence can make a difference.

In July, Obama taped an appeal to support Chicago’s bid when International Olympic officials met in Abuja, Nigeria. In June, the White House announced creation of a new White House Office of Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport.

The event the president and Mrs. Obama will be hosting next Wednesday is with the new Olympic office and the Chicago 2016 group that has been trying for years to land the games in Chicago. Jarrett was part of that leadership when she was in Chicago and now directs the White House part of the U.S. drive to get the games in Chicago.

I was told by the White House the Olympic athletes and paralympic athletes will in a sense be doing double duty—boosting Chicago at the White House in the afternoon while also promoting youth sports and healthy activities at Washington area schools in the morning.

Welch said Kelly lived with Flores at her condo in the Park Millennium building in the 200 block of North Columbus Drive....

Flores, 30, whose driver’s license lists her by her married name, Flores-Buhelos, came to public attention more than a decade ago as a star basketball player at Whitney Young High School. She combined athletic ability with skill and played a key role on the 1995 city championship team.

The 5-foot-8-inch guard went on to play at Northwestern University....

She is a manager at a Milwaukee Avenue club, Gillespie said. State records list her as a “manager/partner” at the VLive club, 2047 N. Milwaukee.

“She’s a very lovely, a very honest woman,’’ he said.

“Clarissa Flores, a co-owner of the V Live”

That's curious given the information in this article: Christopher Kelly death: Details fill in events at hospital Police interview girlfriend; source tells of club fight Was she or wasn't she an owner? Kelly says he gave money to Clarissa, but she's not an owner?

[snip]
Flores-Buhelos brought Kelly into Oak Forest in a wheelchair, sources said. Sometime later he became very combative and had to be restrained. During this time, the sources said, Kelly made a reference to having taken a large amount of painkillers.

Hospital officials declined to comment about what happened at Oak Forest, citing federal health privacy laws. But the sources said Kelly eventually calmed down, was stabilized and that a treating physician at Oak Forest traveled with Kelly by private ambulance to Stroger Hospital so he could receive a higher level of care.

An autopsy was inconclusive, and toxicology tests are pending. Police have said Tylenol wrappers and a large container of pills were found in Kelly's SUV.

[snip]
Kelly had pleaded guilty last week to tax and mail fraud charges in a kickback scheme at O'Hare International Airport and was scheduled to report to prison this week. As part of the federal investigation, authorities were looking at money Kelly gave Flores-Buhelos as an investment for a Logan Square nightclub, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The source said that Kelly recently went to the nightclub at 2047 N. Milwaukee Ave. and wanted to check on the club's financial books. A club owner, though, refused to allow Kelly to see the books, angering Kelly. The two allegedly exchanged words, the source said.

In the course of following up on Kelly and his finances, the FBI recently went to the club and asked about it. It was at that time that the owner repeated the story and said Kelly had threatened the owner, the source said.

[snip]
Norma Martinez, a representative of Aragon Entertainment Center and the nightclub, said last week that Kelly had an altercation at the club with another co-owner, whom she declined to identify. She said Kelly had no ownership in the club.

On Monday, an attorney for the club, Carlos Vazquez, said Flores-Buhelos worked in a non-managerial position "for a month or so" in the club's first-floor restaurant.

"Neither Clarissa nor Chris Kelly were owners or investors," Vazquez said.
