WASHINGTON — A White House panel of independent space experts says NASA's return-to-the-moon plan just won't fly.
The problem is money. The expert panel estimates it would cost about $3 billion a year beyond NASA's current $18 billion annual budget.
"Under the budget that was proposed, exploration beyond Earth is not viable," panel member Edward Crawley, a professor of aeronautics at MIT, told The Associated Press Tuesday.

Another baby to kill. Liberals will never have any sense of understanding anything beyond their “d!ck” headed so called friends’ wishes.
Lets not forget that the democrats tried slipping over $120 billion to ACORN in the first round of the bank bailout fight.
This about putting America in such a deep hole that it will take a century to dig us out if ever.
Let’s face facts. The Moon will be visited by private enterprise, not NASA, if the government *permits* private enterprise to do so. Which they probably will not.
NASA has a problem in that its sole concern is basic research, nothing practical. A private corporation, while amenable to research, does so with practical motives, and more importantly, a strategic vision.
The reason for a private corporation to go to the Moon does not need a manned mission at first. A robot ship will scoop up dust, carry it inside the ship, warm it to release the Helium-3 in it, then dump the “used” dust while concentrating the Helium-3, to return it to Earth.
Once it does so, He3 is so very valuable, that it will pay for the mission, and many more missions, with a substantial profit margin.
Then, if the He3 can be used in a nuclear fusion process, its value will be much greater, and stimulate further Lunar visits.
You’re forgetting the outer space treaty. We arent allowed to make money from anything in space.
