[Valerie] Jarrett is most notably friends with Barack and Michelle Obama. They have been friends since Jarrett hired Michelle to work in the Chicago mayor’s office in 1991.
She is one of the most connected people in Chicago, and now national, Democratic politics. She is still close to Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, whom she worked with for years, and she counts Chicago entrepreneur Penny Pritzker, Obama’s 2008 national finance chair, among her closest friends.
She is closely tied into Obama’s Chicago network. Her father mentored Eric Whitaker and Anita Blanchard at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Both are good friends with the Obamas, and Blanchard is married to Martin Nesbitt, another close Obama friend, who served as the 2008 campaign treasurer.
She served on the board of the University of Chicago Lab School with Michelle Obama, Martin Nesbitt and John W. Rogers, a friend and the former husband of Social Secretary Desiree Rogers.
Jarrett works directly with Tina Tchen both in the office of public liaison and on the White House Council on Women and Girls, which Jarrett chairs and Tchen is the executive director.

According to the documents obtained by Judicial Watch from the Illinois Secretary of State, Valerie Jarrett served as a board member for several organizations that provided funding and support for Chicago housing projects operated by real estate developers and Obama financial backers Rezko and Allison Davis. (Davis is also Obama’s former boss.) Jarrett was a member of the Board of Directors for the Woodlawn Preservation and Investment Corporation along with several Davis and Rezko associates, as well as the Fund for Community Redevelopment and Revitalization, an organization that worked with Rezko and Davis

As Chief Executive Officer of the Habitat Company Jarrett also managed a controversial housing project located in Obama’s former state senate district called Grove Parc Plaza. According to the Boston Globe the housing complex was considered “uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage...In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale — a score so bad the buildings now face demolition.” Ms. Jarrett refused to comment to the Globe on the conditions of the complex.

...By the late 1960s David Canter was publishing a small politically oriented Chicago neighbourhood newspaper Hyde Park Kenwood Voices. Canter’s partner and the paper’s editor was Don Rose, a journalist active in at least two Communist Party fronts....
David Canter’s late wife, Miriam Canter, was of similar mind. She was an active fundraiser for a defense committee for prominent medical researcher and secret Communist party member Dr. Jeremiah Stamler who was also under investigation by HCUA.
It was Don Rose (right) that hired a young political science student David Axelrod to write for “Voices”. It was Rose who mentored Axelrod and recommended him for the job at the Chicago Tribune which would launch his stellar career....

With nine others, Canter approached Democratic Party congressman Harold Washington about standing for the Chicago mayoralty. Canter had known Washington for many years, not surprising as the congressman had ties to Chicago’s communists and socialists dating back until the 1940s.

Don Rose and David Axelrod also worked for Harold Washington. Rose served as an adviser to the mayor, while Axelrod served as a campaign consultant.

While Harold Washington died shortly after starting his second term, the coalition that elected him endured. The Chicago Communist Party was a key component of this alliance as was the Democratic Socialists of America. By the late 70s Don Rose had become close to the Chicago socialists as had Charles Hayes and Harold Washington himself.
