Download or search the entire list of White House Staff for 2009 as reported 7/1/2009 to Congress.
What am I missing here? Who pays them?
good find and good point
Time to go spelunking..let’s get to digging people!
Van Jones hiring announced via White House press release 3/10/09.

Van Jones’s boss (also not on the report & another SF/Berkely type) and the department he falls under (with other staffers listed). Makes Van Jones look like an underboss.

They are listed as assistants or counselors.
For ex, see Browner, Carol or DeParle, Nancy.
Holdren (Science “czar”) isn’t listed and neither are Van Jones or the chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Van Jones’s boss.
All were part of the White House team for some months before this report.
Valerie Jarrett, Rahm Emanuel and Gibbs are there ($172k per year) but I’m not seeing most of the “czars.”
I have Crowley (AIDS czar) but am not finding others, especially the ones (like Van Jones) that were president-appointed and don’t appear to be under the umbrella of other departments.
Not saying anything untoward is going on but it is interesting that the “most transparent” report of White House employees (their words on the landing page) is glaringly incomplete - especially given Gibbs’s admission today that Jones works in the White House.
Copied into spreadsheet and it added up to
$34,390,222
for me.
Where does all this money come from?
How much does the white house get to spend?
I am thinking that maybe some of these people technically are employed by regulatory agencies (e.g. EPA) but are called czars because of the way they were hired and the nature of their positions.
As for anything untoward going on (such as a few convenient and “accidental” oversights), I wouldnt rule it out.
I think you’re right in many cases, Cam Davis (Great Lakes “czar”, under EPA) for one.
That said, it does seem like some entire departments, under the Executive branch, are missing from this report.
Makes me wonder how many “shadow” folks there are in the White House in leadership and/or czar roles and how much supporting staff is also missing from the report.
For instance - Van Jones can’t possibly be the only “green jobs” staffer in the WH - who and how many are the rest. If Van Jones - the direct appointee of Obama - is not on the list, then who else is missing?
