When I was a kid (about 8) I wrote to the White House and got an autographed photo of Gerald Ford, who was then president, in response. I was thrilled. I would have been thrilled to get an address from Ronald Reagan too.

The problem lies in that it appears from the teacher prep material that Obama is not really just giving the kids a thrill. And now I have the utmost respect for my parents. They did their job in teaching me to be skeptical and that politics DOES matter. Now it’s time for me to do mine and teach my son — of course he already has a love American history and appreciates the sacrafices of so many for the freedoms we have today. He loves the story about the War of 1812 and the writing of the Star Spangled banner. It’s difficult for me to imagine him moved by anything Obummer has to say, but I will see to it that he isn’t.
