Click on link to watch; actually mostly audio. From 1994, Howie Carr, then with WHDH AM 850 talks with John Farrar who discovered Mary Jo Kopechne's body. He was pressured not to talk about his discoveries.
excerpt: Howie Carr: John let me just get this straight..your belief is that while Ted Kennedy was walking past all these houses back towards the "party house" where we're broadcasting from now, Mary Jo was still alive.
Farrar: Uh, that is correct.
Carr: And she would have been alive probably for about an hour, do you think.
Farrar: I think that's most reasonable--an hour if not longer, that's correct.
Carr: How fast do you think the car was going when it hit the water?
Farrar: That has been proved by several different engineers--one on Chappaquiddick, the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, uh, and others to be between 35 and 45, 35 and 40 miles an hour. However the court only accepted 20 miles an hour and destroyed the evidence which the Registrar of Motor Vehicles gave to the court stenographer to, so that they would not have to come out with an indictment of manslaughter.
Carr: So the court accepted that he was going 20 miles an hour even though all the evidence, even by the Registry of Motor Vehicles, which was controlled by a sympathetic Democrat, Richard McLaughlin indicated he was going between 35 to 45 miles an hour
Farrar: ...he finally was bullied into putting down 20 miles an hour...
How’s the joke working for you now, Ted?
Thank you for this post. I’ve never heard this before.
His taxes were audited three times in one year after he started to speak out about what he saw.
Indications were that Mary Jo suffocated. Could have been saved...
And people started settling on the island after the whole thing made it “a household world”. Wow, Ted crashing Rose’s car was good for the real estate business!
you’re welcome—actually it’s been on Howie Carr’s site Fatboy.cc for awhile....
I would urge you and all to look at Leo Damore’s book. My copy is from 1988.
It’s titled Senatorial Privilege.

Suffocated? I think you mean drowned. How did she suffocate? In water?
Will do. Thanks.
thought her air ran out...the water level kept rising up eventually I think but I thought I heard the cause of death was actually suffocation. Who knows, maybe was drowning but the D.A. (acc. to Wikipedia) left some doubt:
>>citing blood found on Kopechne’s skirt and in her mouth and nose “which may or may not be consistent with death by drowning”.
She moved herself to an area of the car where there was an air pocket and remained alive until there was no more air to breath. There is a diagram of it on that fatboy site.
She suffocated. She swam or moved to the back of the car. There was an air pocket there. She used up that oxygen and died.
re-read it a few months ago...a copy was left in the “reading room” at work.
Damore, it’s said, couldn’t find work after his book was published...shunned. When Howie Carr interviewed him awhile back he was in dire financial straits—Howie was going to give him $100 or something and Damore was so desperate he asked for it right away so Howie gave him a personal check and then got the radio station to re-imburse him. Damore
later killed himself (all acc. to Howie Carr show)
Ask yourself this:
The car goes off the bridge, the Whale gets out, but he doesn't pull Mary Joe out nor does she swim out on her own. Why? Why did she stay in a car that was in only 7 feet of water with the air running out if she was wide awake and able to function?
I believed then, and I believe now, she was deliberately murdered by Kennedy. No proof, but plenty of circumstantial evidence and the cover up alone should have had many people serving jail sentences over her death.
Her Parents are probably roasting in he** right along with Ted for allowing him to buy them off.
There was an air pocket with enough oxygen for about an hour. After she exhausted the supply she suffocated. There was also evidence she clawed the upholstery during this period. The terror must have been unbearable.
